Mumbai’s famous Gateway of India, was built to welcome King George V. Boats leave from
here, ferrying you to Central konkan Coast, with tickets charging only Rs. 120. We are
sailing through Arabian Sea on our way to Alibaug. It is one of the most popular weekend
destinations among youth in Mumbai and nearby areas. A lot of people working in Mumbai,
go back to their homes at central konkan coast, commuting through boats to spend their weekend.
On, it’s way, the ferry pass by Bombay High, and many other big carriage ships to reach
Mandwa. We have just finished 1 hour ferry ride to reach Mandwa, from here one has to
take 45 mins of Bus/taxi ride to reach Alibaug. . One may also reach Alibaug by road after
completing 113kms. Alibaug beach offers many rejuvenating water
sports andhorse ridings. Large numbers of people come here to spend time on leisure
and fun activities. The Kolaba fort is located just across Alibaug beach on a rock jutting
out into the sea. Around low tide, water becomes shallow enough for people to wade or take
horse rides to the the fort. Kolaba fort is the prime attraction of Alibaug, both the
kolaba fort and Alibaug owe their existence to Maratha, Kanhoji Angre, an important admiral
of Shivaji. It was built in 1680 to fight the mighty naval prowess of the Siddis' (Abyssenians)
of Janjira and the British of Mumbai. Kolaba fort is famous for many battles, between Siddis
and Kanhoji Angre, the British and the Portuguese. The fort also houses an ancient temple. The
views from the top of the fort are exciting as it is surrounded by sea on all sides.
Many kiosks outside Alibaug beach serve local delicacy, pooran poli a bread made of rice
flour and variety of fishes cooked in Konkan style.
20mins walk through Akshi village takes you to the Akshi beach. Outside the beach
locals sell dried sea food like prawns, crabs, fish, etc. and coconut water and other mouthwatering
eating options. Akshi is a quite beach as compared to Alibaug, not many tourists visit
this beach, but locals can be seen playing cricket. A walk on this beach is wonderful
, as it has water on one side and has lush green trees on the other. This beach has many
sceneries. Well, we have further to go but before that let’s take a tea break.
Nagaon beach located 7km to the south of Alibaug is the major tourist attraction. A lot of
young people come here to have a good time. It is also called as ‘Mini-Goa’ or less
commercial Goa. Silver sparkling sea adds to the beauty of the place. It shines like
a thousand diamonds. The beach offers very serene atmosphere interspersed with damp laden cool breeze blowing gently
around. People indulge in exotic water sports here. Jet ski, paragliding and other water
rides are filled with thrill. Beautiful scenes, it has got something for everyone.
It is a perfect place to spend some quality time with your loved ones as setting sun adds
to one very beautiful evening filled with warmth and love.
