Hi everybody, this is Hooper.
Today we'll talk about the last episode of the DBZ fighting game released for the Super Nes,
Dragon Ball Z Hyper Dimension.
A game fundamentally different from the Super Butoden Trilogy,
of which I've already made you videos.
But you'll see that.
Here we see a magnificient tracking shot on Goku's face...
With the little beautiful music in the background,
I'd almost be close to shed a tiny tear,
because it inevitably brings memories back.
It came out in 1996, so quite late.
It was the end of the 16-bit era.
Still developed by Bandai, of course.
But I want to say "Hallelujah" to Bandai, because finally we have a fighting game,
worthy of this name and which honors this magnificient saga, that is Dragon Ball Z.
It was about time, better late than never, as they say.
but finally, we've got it.
Even though it's a bit late, 1996,
it was already the 32-bit era then, the Saturn and the Playstation were there
and frankly, who would've bought a 600 francs game (about 120 USD/78 GBP),
a Super Nes game for 600 francs, when right next to it,
there was a 400 francs game for Playstation or Saturn?
Nobody, of course. Nobody.
I'm not telling you the 16-bit games were less good than the 32-bit ones,
but for the general public, it was the case.
The funny thing, in 1995 Bandai already made us some DBZ games released for Playstation and Saturn,
like Ultimate Battle 22 or Final Bout,
which can't hold a candle to Hyper Dimension!
Yet, they were much more successful than this Hyper Dimension,
yet they were released for a technologically superior console,
while this Hyper Dimension is technologically superior to the 32-bit opus!
I don't know if I made myself understood in that sentence,
but there was a little paradox here, there was something wrong.
A demo is just started.
Gohan against his father.
Look Gohan's aura, it's magnificient.
All the auras of this game were rethought,
when we concentrate, they all are different for each character.
You'll see concerning the technique, the execution, the estheticism,
the character's design and skin, that's awesome.
From A to Z, it's awesome.
We can blame the game for being a bit slow, for having sometimes slowing downs,
for having an animation not as well decomposed as in a classical Street Fighter 2,
but frankly, just concerning the technique, it's pushed very far.
This game can compete with games like Street Fighter 2, Fatal Fury and all that.
Which wasn't the case at all for the Super Butoden Trilogy,
of which I already made you videos.
Let's see a bit what it is about.
You'll see, this game is fundamentally different from the games that came out before.
So, first little problem, there is no Story Mode anymore.
Because we need to know that, unlike DBZ 3 Super Fighting Story 3,
which hadn't a Story Mode in the american, japanese and european version,
here, it did exist a Story Mode in the japanese version of this DBZ Hyper Dimension,
which was flushed down the drain, disappeared in its french version.
Why? That's a puzzler, nobody will ever know.
Anyway, we don't have it anymore, too bad for us!
Well, we're a bit used to get screwed from all sides anyway.
So, still the Tournament Mode, the Practice Mode, to train...
We don't really care about that, I won't dwell on the subject.
I'll play a game against the CPU, of course, as I'm alone.
Up to two players can play, of course.
10 playable characters and attention, big crew here, really awesome stuff.
The rendering of the character selection has never been as great as here.
It's excellent, we really have a beautiful sample of the DBZ characters.
As you can see, Perfect Cell, Frieza in its most powerful form,
ditto for Gohan,
the fusion of Goku and Vegeta, the fusion of Goten and Trunk,
Gigabuu (Kid Buu), I don't really like that name, actually it's the original form of Buu,
as he was born, he was like this, Little buu actually,
Fat Buu, as we see him the first time in the anime,
Majin Vegeta, Goku in his 2nd form, maybe here, we'd've preferred his third one,
with the long hair, well, too bad for us!
His Meteor Smash...
Because each fighter, as in DBZ 2 and 3, has his own combos and co.
and also a famous Meteor Smash.
Piccolo...
Goku's Meteor Smash, during 2 seconds, he transforms himself...
I'll take Buu before the sandglass ends...
Goku transforms himself in Super Fighter 3rd level, it's quite well done.
Maybe I'll have the occasion to show it to you.
Here we go.
Ah blast, it's the night.
I should've gone in the options
to unselect the randomly choosing of the time of the day.
So, how could I explain?
Because I've got a lot to tell you
and it'll be complicated given that I'll try to play well...
I'll try a Final Flash...
The ***! He dodged it!
Did you see his dodge here? Because this is a novelty.
Look, I'll do it...
***, he did it at the same time!
Actually, we propell ourselves to the bottom of the stage,
it's quite well done, it's a sort of dodge but also of counter-attack,
because then, we propell ourselves toward the enemy.
It's really well rendered,
there is a kind of a Zoom-in Zoom-out effect of the character.
He's protecting himself, here, this ***, I can't hit him.
There is a kind of Zoom-in Zoom-out effect and it's really well done.
So, it permits to dodge the Energy Balls AND to immediately counter-attack,
that's excellent.
We still can send little Energy Balls like this...
Oh the ***, he parried it here...
Wait, I'll send him 3 fireballs at the same time, if I can...
Because I trained a bit with Vegeta...
Here...
You're getting on my nerves!
I'll throw you, you're bugging me!
Take this, ***!
I'll do a Final Flash, if I can...
That can't be true, he dodged it again!
Maybe I should've reduced the CPU's power level, because I'm getting destroyed here.
Look, here we can concentrate...
Wait, I sent me a ball here...
When I concentrate, look at my Life Bar,
the life is symbolized by a number system, here I have 360,
AND by a bar.
We need to know that in this DBZ,
the life and the energy were fused together in a single bar.
I explain myself: look, for example when I do the...
The ***!
Look, I'll do the Final Flash, I have 280 of life now.
Look! Now I have 270 of life.
I pause the game to explain more clearly,
because I can't comment and play at the same time.
When we do a Special Attack like the Kamehameha, Final Flash and that kind of stuff,
we lose a bit of energy.
But, we can also regain it.
You see here, I've lost 10 energy points doing this Final Flash.
Look, I'm concentrating by pressing the 2 buttons simultaneously...
See, my life increase 5 points by 5 points, 305, 310, 315, 320...
***! I could dodge his Mega Attack!
***, take this!
I was explaining that now, by concentrating...
***!
...that by concentrating, we could regain life.
And we can endlessly regain it, that means the fights are...
Oh quick, a dodge! Magnificient dodge, I could parry it!
We'll finish him quickly... I know how I'm going to finish him...
Like that!
Ah ***, I did it too close to him.
What a ***, he came on the other side!!
Ah the ***!
How am I going to finish, wait, I must think...
Ah yes I know, I know what I'm going to do, a Knee Kick...
No, I missed it here.
Take this ***! Ah the asshhole
I'll finish him like this...
That can't be, he parries it everytime, this ***!
***, ***!!
It's getting on my nerves here.
Come on, you were almost dead!
Wait, I'll finish him...
I can't remember what I was saying, but I'll start another fight to explain you more.
There are a lot of things, you see the screen isn't split in 2 anymore,
that's really one of the big novelties.
So, you're finished here.
He's dead.
Yes, that's one of the big changes from the Super Butoden,
that is, the screen doesn't split in 2 anymore.
Now we're really dealing with a traditional fighting game,
Street Fighter 2, Fatal Fury-like, etc...
For my part, I've never been a fan of the Super Butoden,
so I was pleased to see another DBZ game,
an old-school DBZ game, do you see what I mean?
Like a good old Street Fighter. So I was pleased to see this.
So, I'll change character, I'll take Gotenks.
We'll fight against I don't know who...
Right, against Fat Buu...
I think I really should show you all the characters, because they all are awesome.
Now, the arena selection, I haven't told about that yet.
Ah so many things to explain in this game!
I also love the little animations with the characters here...
So, the arena selection.
We can select 5 arenas, but look, for example the central arena,
you see there are 6 screens.
We'll start in the screen down in the middle,
that is the Martial Arts Tournament.
But by doing a kind of hit combos...
How could I explain this...
The fighting environments are composed of different screens.
By doing a sort of special combo,
I'll throw my opponent either horizontally or vertically.
For example, if I propell him vertically, I'll throw him up in the air.
I'll try to... We'll take this arena.
I must absolutely show you this.
We still have the handicaps, I'll put the lowest Power level for the CPU,
so that I can show the throws...
That's really one of the most important aspects of the game, I think.
I'll try to do it, that's quite hard...
Because generally, they protect themselves when we do that...
Ah good, I did it!
You see, it was with a special hit, with the "X" button, we're propelled up in the air.
That's excellent!
I didn't tell you this, but unlike in the Super Butoden,
we can't directly go up in the air anymore, by only pressing "X",
we bluntly need to do this technique.
And when we're like this, that's completely different,
we're a bit in weightlessness...
First you see this magnificient background,
it reminds us a bit of Secret of Mana, with the Mode 7 in the background, I love it.
And the hits change, for example, I can send fireballs upwards or downwards,
most of the hits changed, there are a lot of different stuffs.
Now, when we do a normal hit, we kind of get pulled toward the opponent...
Actually, a lot of things changed.
But frankly, I don't find the flying fights extraordinary,
I find them quite slow, there is a lack of precision, not very fun,
plus, we can't dodge toward the background anymore, like I showed you earlier.
So, I find it's quite average.
Wait, I'll try to throw him upwards again...
You'll see I can throw him upwards again.
Now, we can also choose to attack upwards, look...
See, we can do the punches upwards or downwards...
Look the aura, I didn't show you, look at Gotenks's aura.
Ah if he could back off for a second...
Look, isn't that magnificient, frankly? It's really well done.
Each character has his own personalized aura.
Here, I'll try to throw him upwards, if I can...
I did it...Here you'll see, we'll reach the World's King palace.
We can also do that laterally, that is rightwards and leftwards.
Frankly, isn't that excellent? It's excellent.
I'll try to show some little attacks, even if I almost forgot everything...
How do we attack again? Wait...
That's a swoop down attack.
I trained a bit before, because I had forgotten everything, of course.
What haven't I told you?
Wait, I'll show you Gotenks's Magic Attack, it's magnificient, you'll see.
Actually it's the Super Ghost Kamikaze Attack.
Oh the ***... Look...
I send him the Super Ghosts, oh, I sent him very high...
Isn't this attack superb?
Here, each fighter really has his own attacks...
I got him here...
Really has his own personalized attacks, it's really well done.
Each character has his own face expression.
Here, once again, you see a superb animation when they defuse at the end...
That really pleased me, the design and the character's skin...
"You'll regret having upset me!"
It's true I liked this game.
It maybe is a bit slow, the animation isn't necessarily well decomposed,
once again less good than in Street Fighter 2, it's true,
all the more so as, back then, Street Fighter Alpha 2 was here.
Who am I going to take, I've no idea, I don't know...
We'll take Piccolo and a fighter I haven't showed you yet...Gohan.
Gohan is quite good at dodging.
There are a lot of thing, the Rushing Attack, there is so much to explain in this game!
The Rushing Attack happens when 2 fighters kick and punch at the same time,
a sort of combo is started...
I'll go there, I haven't showed you this arena yet, it's Namek.
A kind of combo is started and we need to press madly "A" to get out of it.
There is also a sort of dodge...
I'll try to do it, because Gohan does it quite often.
I'll show you his technique....
The Makankosappo!
It's not very impressive...
It's true the magical techniques aren't very impressive, that's sure...
Take this, ***! What an ***, he parried my attack...
See here, the magnificient Gohan's aura.
Take this, ***! Super Kicks here...
Well, it's one of the only attacks I've learned with Piccolo, so I do it...
I don't remember what was the other attack...
No, it's not that...
Ah yes, I had learned the Chasing Energy Attack...
Ah, another attack: every character can do a sort of Kamehameha, diagonally, like that...
I just made it...
I missed it...
Missed it here too...
Here too, well!
I can't do it anymore. Anyway.
What did I want to show you again? I forgot...
Look, now I'll try to throw Gohan to the right side,
so, to send him in another dimension, that's why the game is called Hyper Dimension,
even if that's not really the case...
Ah damn! He made me a good combo here....
Look, I'll concentrate to restore my life, because it's only at 124...
Frankly, isn't the aura superbly done?
When we concentrate, it's the perfect...
Ah that can't be! I want to throw you to the other side!
I can't do it...
Did you saw this? Here, he parried my attack and counter-attacked it straightaway.
That's the parade system of the game.
I did it!!
It's quite hard to place because he protect himself quite often...
If you remember, Frieza did this big hole on Planet Namek...
Wait, I see Piccolo's state is critical, that means, I can do his Meteor Smash...
But wait, because I completely forgot how to do it...
So, I'll go take a look on internet, Piccolo's Meteor Smash...
Forward, Back, Down, Up, Y and B. (Desperation Attack)
I'm not sure I'll succeed...
We'll still try...
Forward, Back, Down, Up, Y and B... Ok.
I missed it...
It's hard...
The ***!!
Nevermind. I'll give up.
Anyway I think I've told you about everything about this game,
well, not everything, but a good part.
It's a flying fight here, so not what I prefer... It's true I find them quite average.
Most of the hits change in comparison to when we're on the ground...
Take this, ***!
Come on, kill me!
Like that, I'll have the time to show you other characters...
Come on, kill me, finish me!
Good.
What didn't I show you?
No, I've told you about everything.
The fights, as you can see, always happen in a single winner row,
there is no timer, we're not in Street Fighter 2.
There are a lot of digitized voices, once again, very well done ones.
We need to know we came from 16-bit in the Super Butoden catdridge,
to 24-bit on this cartdridge and we can see the difference, the 24-bit are really here.
I've told you about everything, I think.
I'll take a one last character... What didn't I show you?
Cell... And who didn't I show you? Goku...Ah yes, you saw him in the intro.
I'll show you the fusion (Goku/Vegeta) and we'll stop there.
I think I'll show you another video showing you the...
Damn, the animation when we see the characters is really well done.
I think I'll make you a video showing you the Meteor Smashes of DBZ 2, 3 and 4,
because frankly, they're really worth it.
Well, I'll put the level 2...
The musics are quite good, I didn't told you about that,
there are more than in the other DBZ,
there are well over ten, very well made, they're punchy, it's really good.
Look, when we concentrate....
Each character is different concerning this, that's really good.
I'll try to...
Ah another thing I didn't show you, look...
We can grade the power of the...
Here I made a little Kamehameha, you couldn't see it well, but I'll do it again...
See, here it's a little one, if I press the button longer, it'll be a big Kamehameha.
Now, we can also grade the power.
It's quite good. There are a lot of little things like that,
it's difficult to explain everything.
Let me be clear, I suck here, because I don't know the techniques,
that's why I can't do it well.
Ahh, there was a technique with Cell... Wait...
Wait...I'm looking in the manual here, because there was a quite nice thing to do...
The little Cells, exactly, the Junior Attacks,
Right, Left, Right and "B", I'll try to show this to you...
Because it's really well done, you'll see...
Look, he lays little Cell and a little Cell charges at...
That's really excellent, because there really are many personalized attacks, like this...
He got him...
We still can do the famous forwards and backwards dodges, look...
That's excellent.
I've told you about everything.
Once again, I'm not a king at that game, that's for sure.
I think I've told you about everything...
We'll restore a bit our energy...
This game s much more refined and advanced than the Super Butoden,
it's very tactical, very technical, it has almost nothing more to do with...
The thing is, playing in solo is quite tedious, we really should play in two,
to really have fun playing solo, it's quite average.
Once again, the game is a bit slow, the animation isn't that well decomposed,
I didn't necessarily find fun in the flying fights...
I'll try to throw him in another dimension...
Ah ***!
Ah I almost did it, but he protected himself...
Ah the ***!
Oh he got me!
Anyway, we'll stop on this death. It's quite pitiful, too bad for me.
So, we'll stop here, I think I've told you about everything,
it's really a good game, one of the best DBZ 2D ever made,
superior to the DBZ 2D made on 32-bit, so that's quite shameful.
That's a good game.
Its only snag was that it came out too late, at the end of the 16-bit era.
So, I tell you bye bye and see you next time.
