For Complex News, I’m Frazier, and judging by the hype over J. Cole’s new project,
he has the potential to once again go platinum without any features.
As recent as the end of last week, J. Cole had changed his Twitter and Instagram avatars
to a purple-ish color, with no real reasoning why.
At the time, many speculated that the Dreamville don was about to drop some new music, and
Cole stoked those fires with the announcement that he’d be at the Gramercy Theatre in
New York City on Monday night.
The announcement specified that there’s be no phones, cameras, or press lists, and
that entry would be on a first come, first serve basis.
After dropping that announcement, J. Cole returned to Twitter to inform the people that
his new album, titled ‘KOD,’ would be dropping on Friday, April 20.
AKA whoever was lucky enough to get into the Gramercy on Monday night was going to be hearing
material from Cole’s latest.
And even though phones were not permitted in the building, it looks like some audio
was snuck out of the venue, and judging by what’s floating around, this album is sounding
HOARD.
Rap Radar’s Brian “B. Dot” Miller was in the building and dropped some knowledge
on the project via Twitter after the listening.
While there’s no confirmation on what the title KOD stands for, he did offer up three
different subtitles for the project: Kidz On Drugs, King Overdose, and Kill Our Demonz.
He said the album is about 12 tracks long, and stressed that the tracklists going around
are fake.
Miller also says that only two track titles were mentioned, including “1985,” which
he called a standout track.
Cole reportedly said that he recorded KOD in the span of two weeks, and others who were
in attendance are saying that the album closer “1985” also introduces whatever would
be Cole’s next album.
With Cole’s next project dropping on what many consider to be the high holiday for weed
smokers, we already know how many of you Cole fans are going to be celebrating.
How are you feeling about the project?
What are your theories on what the title KOD means?
