Anjaan ( Fearless) is an upcoming Tamil gangster thriller film being directed by N. Lingusamy,
and produced under his own banner Thirupathi Brothers. The film stars Suriya in a dual
role, with Samantha Ruth Prabhu as the female lead, while Bollywood actors Manoj Bajpai,
Vidyut Jamwal, Rajpal Yadav and Dalip Tahil play supporting roles. Cinematography and
editing are handled by Santosh Sivan and Anthony, respectively, while Yuvan Shankar Raja has
composed the music. Anjaan is slated for release on August 15, 2014.
In July 2012, it was reported first that Suriya had signed on Lingusamy's film to be produced
under the director's banner and that he would work on it after Maattrraan
and Hari's Singam 2. After the completion of both films, the actor was reported to work
simultaneously with Lingusamy and director Gautham Menon for a film titled Dhruva Natchathiram.
In September 2013, many sources incorrectly stated that the film was titled Rowdy, however
the director denied these as rumors. Suriya reportedly waited for six months after the
release of Singam 2, but failed to receive a complete
script from Gautham Menon and no progress took place in this period of time. Owing to
this reason, he opted out of Gautham's film in October
2013 and announced that he would soon start work on Lingusamy's film. The director confirmed
the news and also stated the film would officially
start filming from mid-November 2013. It was said that the script had been modified a few
times. The film was started without a title. In January
2014, the title was officially announced to be Anjaan.
Vijay Milton was first roped in by Lingusamy as the cinematographer for the film, but in
October 2013 he was replaced with Santosh Sivan,
who worked for the first time with Lingusamy. In mid-October, a test shoot occurred with
Suriya and Malavika Rampradeep, a Bharatanatyam dancer, with the Red Dragon
Digital camera along with a high zoom lens. It was reported that it was the first film
in the world to be shot with the camera. The
technology had not even been used in Hollywood films, according to the makers.
The film's editing was reported to be handled by Anthony while Rajeevan was roped in as
the art director. Brinda Sarathy will be working as dialogue writer for the film. Suriya
was said to possess two different appearances for filming, starting with a raw and
jagged look. In early November, Manoj Bajpai was reported to be playing the film's antagonist
while Vidyut Jamwal would also appear in a prominent role. Dalip Tahil was signed for
the role of a small, but powerful don in the film. Comedian Vivek was also signed on by
the team to play a role in the film. In March
2014, another comedian Soori was signed. Sana Khan was approached to do a special number
in the film but she declined the offer as she wanted to promote her Bollywood film Jai
Ho. Filming started on 20 November in Mumbai.
A few days before it began, Suriya completed a photo-shoot of the film which was done by
still photographer Venkatram. The lead actors were shooting in Mumbai, but came back to
Chennai before the one-month schedule. In December 2013 the intro song was filmed
with Suriya, Vidyut Jamwal and Maryam Zakaria. The song, described as a "peppy number",
was shot in a set, worth 80 lakhs, that had been erected in Borivali in Mumbai. The first
schedule was wrapped in early January 2014. In early February 2014, the crew was shooting
for a song sequence in Panchgani. The third schedule started on 5 March 2014 in Mumbai.
A further item number was shot with Manoj Bajpai and Chitrangada Singh in March 2014,
after discussions to have Sonakshi Sinha in the
song were unsuccessful.
Yuvan Shankar Raja composes the soundtrack and score of Anjaan, which marks his fourth
collaboration with director Lingusamy. The soundtrack album would have five songs.
Yuvan had composed one song for the film, which was written by Na. Muthukumar, by August
2013. The "introductory song" was written by Madhan
Karky and sung by Ranjith. In January 2014, the composer worked on the remaining songs
with Lingusamy and lyricist Na. Muthukumar in Singapore.
On the occasion of Pongal, UTV Motion Pictures Tuesday announced it will co-produce actor
Suriya Sivakumar's upcoming Tamil action-thriller 'Anjaan', which is also being produced by
Thirrupathi Brothers. 'Anjaan', which means stranger, is being directed
by N Lingusamy. "We are extremely delighted to continue our
strong relationship with N. Lingusamy's Thirrupathi Brothers after our two successful films
-'Vettai' and 'Ivan Veramathiri'. We look forward to working with Suriya and are confident
that the movie will be a huge mass entertainer and certainly one to look out for in 2014,"
G. Dhananjayan, Chief - South Business, UTV Disney, said in a statement.
The film features Samantha Ruth Prabhu and a host of Bollywood actors such as Vidyut
Jamwal, Manoj Bajpayee and Dalip Tahil in important roles.
Lingusamy said he is happy to co-produce the film with UTV.
"We share a great relationship with UTV and our co-productions with them through our banner
Thirrupathi Brothers, in the past have been highly successful. We value their support
and understanding and happy to co-produce 'Anjaan' with them," Lingusamy added in the
statement. The film recently completed its first schedule
in Mumbai and will head to Goa by the end of January to shoot the second schedule.
'Anjaan' is slated to hit the marquee in August 2014.
It's known that it took a few months for Lingusamy to go on floors with his film with Suriya,
which has now been titled Anjaan (Fearless). While the duo's association had been confirmed
early in 2012, the shooting commenced only a couple of months ago. And this delay, we
hear, is because both the director and the actor
had taken their time to finalize the script from three possible options.
A source says, "Both Suriya and Lingusamy had been part of interesting films in the
past. So, the two decided that even if their project gets delayed, they'd rather wait and
go on floors with a pucca script for their first film together. This delay had even given
rise to rumours that Suriya was unhappy with the director's script. However, the director
had three scripts in hand, out of which they carefully chose one. The story is set in Mumbai,
and Suriya sports two different looks in it. In fact, he was given a lot of references
before he finalized them." Yuvan Shankar Raja and Madan Karky have teamed
up again for this Tamil-Telugu bilingual, the next schedule of which will commence from
end of this month.
Now it is confirmed that Suriya is playing a stylish dual role in Lingusami directed
Anjaan. The director himself in an interview to a
Mumbai based trade magazine has confirmed that Suriya is doing a dual role in Anjaan.
Lingusamy is quoted as saying: “It was great experience working with Suriya as he is a
very dedicated actor. In my film, Anjaan, he plays a gangster from the Mumbai underworld
and we have styled him in a very stylish avatar. This is the first time he will be
playing a double role in which both the characters are stylish.”
The director says the total commitment that Suriya takes in mastering the character he
plays is simply amazing. Suriya and Lingusamy are shooting in Panvel
area of Mumbai, some very difficult action scenes.
Lingusamy concludes by saying Anjaan is a completely commercial film packaged with a
little suspense, drama, action and romance and
will hit the screens on August 15.
Director Lingusamy, who is known for his clean commercial entertainers, is currently helming
the much awaited Suriya - Samantha starrer Anjaan. The director in a
recent interview spilled the beans that Suriya would be doing stylish dual roles
in the movie. We had also reported earlier that Suriya would be sporting two distinct
looks in the movie but now it looks like the ace actor is doing a dual role yet again,
after his earlier double role films like Perazhagan, Vel, Vaaranam Aayiram,
7 am Arivu and Maattrraan. This is an excerpt from Lingusamy's interview
where he talks about Suriya's role and how dedicated he is, on the sets of Anjaan
"Yes, it was a great experience working with him as he is a very dedicated actor. In my
film, Anjaan, he plays a gangster from the Mumbai underworld and we have presented him
in a very stylish avatar. This is the first time he will be playing a double role in which
both the characters are stylish. We have revealed only the first look of the film so far and
the buzz is quite good. It is a completely commercial film packaged with a little suspense,
drama, action and romance. On the whole, it’s a massy film, a holiday release, which
will hit the screens on August 15."
The Suriya - Samantha starrer Anjaan, directed by Lingusamy is one among the most expected
films this year. This film has already been shot
extensively in Mumbai and Goa, and close to 40% of the film has been completed. The remaining
portions of the film will also be canned in the
state of Maharashtra. Currently, the film is being shot in the Whistling Woods campus
in Mumbai. Yuvan Shankar Raja has been signed on to do
music for the film and 5 songs have been planned totally. Yuvan has already worked with Lingusamy
in films such as Sandakozhi, Vettai and Paiyya and his songs played a big role in the success
of all these films. Anjaan has been planned as an August 15th
release to coincide with Independence Day. August 15th also happens to be a Friday,
it must be noted.
