Kia ora team, just wanted to quickly update you on a couple of positive proposals I've put out there this week
The first is a clean energy law I'm proposing for New Zealand.
Many kiwis approach me saying they're investigating, looking at getting solar panels
or sometimes wind or bio-gas generators in the countryside. I want to make it easier for Kiwi households and small businesses to produce their own power
saving on their electricity bills, but also receive a fair and reasonable return for any excess electricity generated to the grid.
New Zealand needs to support greater small scale renewable distributed generation. This is the future - it's about smarter, cheaper, greener electricity
for all New Zealand. If we had more of our households producing our own power from the sun we could have huge system-wide benefits for our electricity
We could be growing jobs, seeing regional economic development, and most importantly, through renewable clean energy, be saving Kiwis money on their power bills.
My second proposal is the Kermadec Ocean Sanctuary Establishment Bill I'm putting in the ballot, this is a bill to create the world's largest marine reserve
around the Kermadec Islands. These are special, unique parts of our country. More people have been to Everest than to the Kermadecs
but it's an amazing environment. The waters around the islands teem with a third of our known fish species, and it's the migratory route for whales, for sharks,
for turtles. It's home to the world's second deepest trench, over 10,000 metres. It's an amazing part of New Zealand, and imagine if New Zealand
was going out onto the world stage creating the world's largest marine reserve, sending the world a strong message New Zealand cares
and takes seriously; marine conservation. Overnight with the stroke of a pen we could from less than half of one percent of all of our waters protected in a marine reserve, to 15%.
This is something I believe we can see cross party support for, it comes with minimal cost, and huge benefits for the country. So here's
This is something I believe we can see cross party support for, it comes with minimal cost, and huge benefits for the country. So here's
two proposals from the Greens; one around making it easier to get clean energy into your household, and secondly to protect our oceans
look forward to seeing more positive green solutions from us over the coming year and we welcome your feedback, we'd love to hear from you - kia ora!
Love and protect our oceans!
