I always wanted to help people contribute to society in some way.
I feel like film had the potential to do that.
My name is Yuta Yamaguchi - I am a filmmaker.
Yuta is my brother and he's always been an inspiration.
I'm Shota Yumaguchi - I design and make custom furniture.
My brother made the desk behind me as a surprise gift for my birthday.
I think his work is pretty amazing; it's simple which I can connect to.
When you're around it, it affects you emotionally which is something
I feel like I try to do with my films, but he does it better with furniture.
He's very passionate about what he does.
He's able to see things that most people I don't think can see.
He's so creative and he's also ready to help at a moment's notice.
Movies that give voices to people that don't have voices
are very important to me.
Film has the potential to inspire and move people.
Initially when I was learning English, a lot of visual things helped me
My dad kept a collection of movies and even though I didn't know English,
I could understand the stories and I appreciated that through those images
you could, you know, communicate.
A lot of Japanese philosophy really appeals to me.
Their design philosophy is simplicity and trying to harmonize
with nature, with the house.
I use 3D modeling software.
With paper and pen, you have to draw different shots from different angles
But with the touch experience, I can, you know, swivel and move.
and if you have any changes, it's a matter of seconds.
I usually prepare all the pre-production material onto my tablet.
And I also research images and inspiration that I could
refer to whenever I'm on set.
I think technology, as it's gotten better, it allows me to do
the things that I love in a more efficient way.
Nowadays, I think it's a necessity to have a web presence,
especially for creative work.
Someone can say, "Hey, this guy is good."
But unless you really see an example of his work,
it's not really going to stick with you.
My parents really supported me from the start.
They were really cool about me and my brother pursuing a creative field.
I think from my mom, we both learned if you're going to do something,
you got to do it the best that you can.
