(off-screen) You love this child
as if he were your own?
Yes.
(narrator) It happens every month
in Texarkana, Texas.
Families adopt children and lives are changed.
It happened to Alexis.
For years, she'd been shuttled
from foster home to foster home.
Then she met Deana May, her teacher.
They drew close,
went to Bible school together.
Then, one afternoon, a question.
All I said was, "Have y'all ever considered adoption?"
We just drove straight ahead.
(off-screen) Is that right?
Wow.
Right. But we never did forget it.
(narrator) But Deana May
and her husband had plans.
There was that cabin in the woods,
time to themselves.
(Deana) We had decided
to buy a cabin,
put it out in the country.
My husband said, the night before,
he said, "I guess this is a go,
"unless we just happen to have a little girl
"fall in our laps."
(narrator) It wasn't easy.
But they gave up the cabin
in the woods, got Alexis instead.
And shortly after, Alexis got Lucky.
(Alexis) He had an infection.
He had bald spots from fleas.
And I kind of relate my life to him.
(narrator) He needed a home.
And I needed a home.
(narrator) Alexis has her home now.
A mom, a dad, a dog.
[applause]
That same thing happened a Thursday afternoon
in a courtroom in Texarkana for these kids.
Some ordinary heroes decided to give them something
real life couldn't.
And if you're still not sure
about that hero thing,
watch this.
(Alexis) Because every child
needs a family.
Someone who cares and loves them.
