Hello, My name is William Elliott. Welcome to 'A Life With Blindness. I am often asked
questions about being blind and I have created this series of videos to answer some of those
questions. I ask you to remember that I am not a health professional The experience I
have had is my own personal experience and other people may have different answers to
these same questions.
Now this may seem a strange question Are there any good things about going blind? I have
to say for me there have been many good things about going blind. Before I went blind I had
plans to do things but never saw them through. One dream I always had was going on a long
train trip. After my first Central Retinal Vein occlusion CRVO, , a blood clot took most of the sight
in my right eye. I set about planning a train trip around the United States. From that I
met the woman who was to be my future wife. We got married and I moved to the United States.
Eventually then I had really a lot of adventures. I met people who I really enjoy meeting One
thing with blindness is it doesn't really matter what someone looks like. You are more
able to deal with how they treat you. as an individual if someone is nice to you it doesn't
matter whether they are what their race is or if they're bald or tall, or short, fat ,thin
whatever You are able to dismiss prejudices far more easily I find. If you're lucky enough
to get to work with a guide dog then that's a really good thing. to come out of blindness.
With a guide dog I am not saying that it is worth going blind just to get a guide dog
but when you work with an animal that is so precious and will look after you to the best
of its ability then it's something really really worth experiencing if you can. I suppose
if maybe you were asking my wife this question probably the best thing about me being blind
is she doesn't have to worry about wrinkles. She will always look as good as the day I was when
sighted and we got married I always think of her that way. In her wedding dress on our
wedding day. That will never change. That is my wife you can hear muttering in the background.
