The 2012 California Governor’s Historic Preservation Awards were presented on November
29th at Leland Stanford Mansion State Historic Park in Sacramento. There were a total of
11 projects or individuals that received awards. What follows is the presentation made at the
awards ceremony about one of the 2012 award winners. Robert C. Pavlik This award salutes
Robert Pavlik, a multi-faceted mentor, advisor, published author, poet, accomplished state
historian and a vital and contributing member of civic organizations, nonprofits, advisory
committees and the Caltrans Historic Preservation Committee. Throughout his career, which included
time spent in both Yosemite and Hearst San Simeon State Historic Monument, Bob has been
a good steward of both natural and cultural resources. This passion for the natural and
cultural environments is particularly evident in Bob’s activities over a quarter of a
century as both volunteer and professional on behalf of the Carrizo Plain National Monument.
As part of the Bureau of Land Management’s Advisory Committee, he worked with the Bureau
and its partners to develop a Resource Management Plan that would provide direction and guidance
for more than 200,000 acres of public lands, which include incredible petroglyphs produced
by the Chumash and Yokuts peoples. Bob’s literary output consists of poetry, essays,
books, pamphlets, magazine, journal, and newspaper articles, and learned treatises, many about
the city he calls home, San Luis Obispo, and its surrounding region. He is the author of
“Norman Clyde: Legendary Mountaineer of California’s Sierra Nevada,” a comprehensive
and well-researched biographical study of the elusive mountaineer and scholar who lived
in the Sierra Nevada Mountains for 60 years. Pavlik’s service to the broader community
is also exceptional, and he has volunteered to lecture students of all ages on the importance
of historic preservation, at places like Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. The best and highest
use of public history, he has written, is “the production of intelligent, objective
studies that lead to discussion, debate, advocacy, appreciation, and understanding.” As Cal
Poly geography professor William Preston so aptly put it: “Bob Pavlik is a valuable
and unmatched asset to the people, environment, and State of California.” Congratulations
to all the winners of the 2012 California Governor’s Historic Preservation Awards.
