Easy closed captioning for youtube
videos
You may wonder why this is a good
idea. Well, sometimes our audio tracts
are glitchy, or our speech is not well
understood, not to mention that
some of us just don't possess good
hearing. But there are other reasons
that you may be unaware of. Much of
closed caption files can be translated
into other languages. These caption
files also serve as tags or key words
in regards to the contents of your
video, making your video easier to
find when the topics of the video are
searched for.
What is great about the service that
youtube provides is that you can
upload a simple notepad file and the
"voice tracking" in the youtube
system will match the words to your
notepad words.
So first, you should make a notepad
file (.txt file) of your "script" or in
other words: a notepad file of what is
spoken within your video.
Second, you will need to go to "video
manager" to find the video that you
wish to provide accurate closed
captioning on. Then you may simply
click the "scroll down" window found
to the right of "edit" of the video and
select "closed captioning". There are
many pathways to this function, as
you can go to +cc found beneath
your video play page, to also reach
this site.
Now, I will demonstrate by walking
you thru the process.....
Ok, the first thing you're going to do if you're going to add captions to a
video is to get to this point here: to
video manager and uploads. Then
you're going to find the video that
you want to put captioning onto... And I want to put it onto this one. So,
I'm going to go to the edit, click this
little down arrow button and go to
captions. And it says to add captions
here. You want to select transcribe
and sync. And then I have already
prepped a subtitle test file (actually it
is closed captioning). For closed
captioning I have a file ready here
for this little test file. What I'm going
to do is just copy this. Now you want to be sure to use
Notepad. The reason you use notepad
is the youtube system here has the
ability to convert that into an SRT file
for you. Ok, So, I ... then I click in here: Video
Transcript, click paste And then there what I had in my
notepad file is now here. Then you click this button here: Sync
And it will tell you "transcript sync is
in progress, and to check back in a
little while". And the way I check that is I go again
to uploads, in that video manager. I
come down to here to the file that I
am working with. You'll see a cc here
when it is done. I'm going to try
refresh, and see what happens, and it's already up.
Oops and other helpful hints.
Ok and this is what it looks like when
it's all uploaded: your closed
captioning...comes out like this, and
these are what is called SRT files. So
everything we've uploaded is now
here and it has a timestamp next to
it's name. And then...
Ok just in case you uploaded your
closed captioning on the wrong
video or something...you can go to
the video and bring these files up click them, click remove, whichever
ones are incorrect, remove them out
of there, and save your changes.
Failed to update...Oh goody! Now
what? well Im trying...let's see what
we've got here. Ah! delete captions,
yes. That's how you do it then. Ah! OK! So now that I've deleted the caption
tract, I can re-upload by clicking add
captions on the proper video. OK!
Great!
There are more things that I could
show you in regards to closed
captions. When you are watching a
video you can turn on the closed
captioning, then increase the letter
size by pressing the plus or minus
sign, change the font, and even
move the text: to the right or left
and even up or down by grabbing it
with your mouse cursor. Should you have questions, I would
be happy to help. Please leave me a
comment below or else send me a
private message. Thanks for
watching, sharing, subscribing, and
commenting. God Bless you all!
