The site of the new Campus Garden at the University of Cologne
Let’s go to the garden!
Great, today we can plant potatoes.
Super! And maybe we can build some plant boxes too.
We’re doing this to bring people together
who like gardening, who like nature,
who like doing handicrafts with other people.
And we want to generate awareness
for the plants, nature and food.
It’s best if you do it like this and then squeeze a little
so that it drops out.
And then brush the soil from the roots a little bit.
They have to be transplanted
because they have to be 30 cm … 10 cm apart.
Yes, I know. Are these radishes?
No, they’re those white, round turnips.
Every week when you come here,
you see how everything has grown a little bit,
and that’s exciting.
I was really happy when I heard about the project.
I wanted to have my own garden for a long time,
but it’s really difficult in Cologne.
We all live in student flats.
What’s more, it’s a great social activity.
You simply show up and there’s almost always someone here.
And then we sit around the campfire and we bake bread on a stick.
It’s simply a very cool thing.
I’m taking part because I love to cook and love to be in nature.
I originally come from the Allgäu region
and that’s why I’ve got a close relationship to nature.
Eventually I got a little bored in Allgäu
and so I came to Cologne,
but somehow I do miss the nature.
I find it very interesting to see
how the food I eat every day is growing.
This is not supposed to be just a place for gardening,
but also sitting around having fun.
In fact, we sometimes sit here on Sunday evenings
and make a fire, someone brings a guitar
and plays some music.
The Campus Garden is open to everyone.
Which means anyone can come around whenever they want.
We have four gardening days a week when somebody is always here.
Usually there are between five and 30 people working here in the garden.
And we are always happy to see new faces and everyone is welcome
whether they’re students or not,
children or grandmothers – it doesn’t matter.
