Maria Rivera is one of those people that make the world just that little bit shinier, and
I am not talking excessive greenhouse emissions. Not only is she a genuinely excellent human
being, but her skill with makeup is Jedi good, and I can give no higher praise than that.
Maria graduated as Dux at Sydney's prestigious makeup artistry school "The Makeup Technician's"
and won First Place in the "Sydney International Makeup Expo" in the field of Glamour. She
has worked on projects such as Australia's Next Top Model, The Today Show, The Biggest
Loser and for designers and labels such as Giorgio Armani, Rachel Hunter, Dotti & Zimmerman.
I first met Maria when I was running a shopping centre promotion for glamour photography in
Brisbane. Over the years Maria and I have worked together on a number of creative photo
shoots , including work published in international magazines and web-zines.
Maria and I are on a scarily similar wavelength when it comes to working on creative collaborations.
We can literally convey through a glance what we think needs to be done on set to get the
results we want. An aspect of Maria's work that really impresses
me is her attention to detail and forward planning. When we are planning one of our
"super-shoots" I will get emails, text messages, MMS's of bits of sketches, colours, shading
and other odds and ends that she is working on. It never ceases to amaze me how accurately
her sketches and concept images reflect the essence of the finished product I see on the
models face. One of my favourite shoots with Maria was
her "Angels and Demons" concept. This was shot in my studio, located halfway between
Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Angels and Demons was not just a photo shoot, but an interactive
Facebook adventure which had our Facebook followers deciding whether Angels or Demons
would win the epic encounter. Suffice to say the bloodthirsty savages voted for the Demons
to triumph and our sexy angel was dispatched back to the heavens from whence she had come.
