Typically, the first question asked when you're on an
interview is, so tell me about yourself.
This should be an introduction that clearly, confidently, and
articulately gives the interviewer an overview of
your education and experience, and the way they have
developed strengths that are key to why
they should hire you.
You might think it's an easy task because it's about
yourself, but if you really want to catch the attention of
the employer, you have to prepare and practice.
First thing you should do is give your an
introduction a structure.
It should be formatted in a past,
present, and future tense.
Talk about past job experience and your education.
Then speak about what you're currently doing.
For example, right now you're a current student at the
College of Westchester.
You should mention your degree, major, expected
graduation date if you haven't graduated yet, and maybe some
job-related courses you are taking or have taken.
Also, you might be working.
You can mention that you're currently working, but get
ready to be asked, why do you want to leave your current job
and why work here?
Some valid responses would be, there's no room for growth,
you got laid off, or you wanted a job in
your field of education.
Lastly, mention future goals or plans you might have.
For example, becoming successful in the position you
are interviewing for to possibly growing within and
making great changes and developments
to enhance the company.
Remember, you want to make it seem as if you're planning to
stay for the long run.
Along hitting these valuable points, you should include
some of your strengths, as they match the strengths the
company is looking for, your interpersonal
and technical skills.
Also mention any accomplishments, skills, and
experiences, such as internships or volunteer work.
Everything you say should be positive.
Remember, you're selling yourself to get position.
Think of it as a commercial advertisement or a politician.
You want the audience, in this case, the employer to believe
that what you are saying is true, and that you are the
perfect candidate for the job.
If you speak about any weaknesses, explain how you
are working on adjusting them.
Remember, accentuate the positive, edit the negative.
