Entrepreneur: Natalie Sisson Episode 28 Suitcase Entrepreneur Natalie Sisson [0:00:11] Beryl:
Hello and welcome to another episode of Wired for Success TV. So today s special guest is
a Natalie Sisson. She s a coach, a blogger, and is also known as the Suitcase Entrepreneur.
Natalie has almost iconic status in teaching others how to create a business and run it
from anywhere in the world. Passionate about having the flexibility of a business that
leverages the power of the internet, Natalie walks her talk. And just this year, whilst
running her business, has visited 23 different countries over 4 different continents. Her
clientele include a large number of women who she sees as a group who need to fully
embrace technology, think big, and grow the business that they deserve. Her very accurate
tag line is, Make money online doing what you love from anywhere. So today, Natalie
is going to share with us how she became such a successful business woman and how with the
right mentoring and support, this lifestyle is available to each of us. So welcome Natalie
to the show. Natalie: Thank you so much for having me. Beryl: We re lucky to pin you down,
lady. Natalie: Thank you for your patience. Beryl: Oh, no problem. So Natalie, I m wondering
what was it in you that spurt this passion for entrepreneurship? Natalie: I would love
to be able to say that it was just something that hit me one day. But honestly, I think
it was more a frustration with being in the corporate world at 9 to 5. So I d always been
in some really fantastic roles and often got to led groups or teams. But I think it was
actually when I was in London working for my final corporate high-paying gig that I
got so immensely frustrated at not being able to do everything that I could to help their
business go to the next level. So it was probably the restrictions, the old boys club aspect
that just made me think, Right. That s it. I m going to start my own business. I didn
t know what it was but I basically left the country, went to Canada and started a technology
company. So I would say it was probably it came out of like most good things, a frustration.
Beryl: And blogging was something that you did quite early on, wasn t it in this kind
of breaking free space? Natalie: Yeah, I guess so although I was probably quite late at blogging.
I didn t start until late 2009. And obviously, it s been around for a long time. But I think
I m probably more unique in that I m a female who travels all over the world full-time by
myself. There are lots of people now who talk about location independence, living more of
a freedom-based lifestyle, et cetera, but I don t know of so many them who are actually
living and breathing it. Often, they ll just be based in a beautiful country somewhere
in the South Pacific but they don t move around quite as much as me. So maybe that was my
point of difference from the blogging side. Beryl: Well, your whole life has unfolded
in a really interesting way, hasn t it? Because I know from a previous conversation, you ve
said it s grown quite organically and yet you plan things along the way. Would you like
to expand on that? Natalie: Yeah. I guess things have grown organically but there s
been a lot of hard work at the back end like with most things. Often, you re doing things
like this and you get the chance to have an interview or an opportunity there to guest
post on other sites which I highly recommend. At the time, all those things are extra duties
I guess in the call of being a blogger but they really, really help in growing your audience
and getting the word out about what you do to other people. So I definitely had a plan
for where I wanted to take things. I set annual goals, monthly goals, but a lot of it has
become organic as I realized what I really enjoy. And blogging is just one of those incredible
tools that just brings so many opportunities to you that I wouldn t have even known when
I started. So I mean I ve built a whole business from a blog and nobody would have told me
that I ve done that when I started. Beryl: Sorry Melanie. Go on. Melanie: Well, I really
was just going to ask Natalie to expand on that because you said it s turned into quite
a lucrative business and when you started out it wasn t necessarily the intention you
had in mind. So, can you sort of expand on that a bit? Natalie: Yeah. So when I started,
I was the co-founder of a technology company in Vancouver and the whole reason I started
my blog was to chart my entrepreneurial journey because I was still very new to it, to talk
about women in business because in the tech industry there s such a small percentage of
women who are founders or co-founders. And that was pretty much why I started my blog
in order to interview them and also to tell my journey and to connect with other women.
And so, I didn t have a business in mind for it. I really just wanted to I think it s very
cathartic to write out your thoughts and to gain a community through that and then to
be able to connect with them. And it was about six months after actually leaving the technology
business that I was part of because my blog has become such a passion that I ended up
turning it into a business so seeing an opportunity to actually earn money through, not necessarily
just through the blog but through the platform that I ve built. Melanie: So I m just trying
to put this into context, so basically what you re saying that as a result of the blogging
and interviewing these women who are co-founders, et cetera, is it that you began to hear what
their problems were, what their issues were? And I m just trying to get a sense of that.
Natalie: Yeah, that s a great question. I think it was two-fold. It wasn t so much their
issues and problems because that was just being in a male-dominated area but I definitely
got a better insight into how they built their businesses, what they viewed as the successful
traits of entrepreneurs, ways to scale your business, grow your business, and until then
I really just had this blog as a platform and a voice. And then I was like, Well, hang
on. There s definitely a way that I could tap into the female community who I was passionate
about helping and deliver products or programs that may serve them. So definitely, I was
listening out for in the comments and in the engagement in the community, what it was they
were struggling with and how I could help. And then the second thing I think to me just
in interviewing these women but also writing out my journey was I began to develop more
of an entrepreneurial mindset in addition to the one that I developed in running the
technology company. So it was more about my own belief and my own abilities and the fact
that I could actually make something out of this platform and turn it into a business.
So I think it was two-fold there. Melanie: You re a great user of social media, aren
t you to help build your brand? Natalie: Yeah. I mean I built it on social media partly because
FundRazr which was the Facebook application that we built in my previous company. Obviously,
being on Facebook, I had to learn a lot about how to use that from a business point of view
but also, a customer s point of view. So that s where my love for social media started.
And then of course, to get the word out about our company, I engaged with Twitter, Google
Plus wasn t around at that time but YouTube videos, of course, we started a blog there
as well. And so, I was just trying to get used to all the avenues and how they work
together running promotions, giveaways, getting our word out on other blogs, media articles.
So that s where my specific skill set kind of grew from. And then when I left that business,
I realized, Well, I had to do that now for myself. But at the same time I was doing it
for myself, I ran about four workshops in Vancouver for entrepreneurs about how to gain
more business using social media, how to implement your strategy and figure out which tools you
should be using and for what purpose. And it went down extraordinarily well. And then
I actually turned that workshop into my first product which was a social media bootcamp.
So yeah, I absolutely adore social media. It s changed a lot in the time even though
I started using it but I think it s a massively useful tool especially for small business
owners with a small budget. Beryl: So, how do you make sure that you don t get lost in
being active in social media and then eating up hours of your time and actually you know
how that can be. But actually, no see no difference in your business. Can you give us some tips
on what you should be doing there? Natalie: Well first of all, I always say to people,
You have to know where your customers are and when you know where they are then those
are the social media sites that you could be using. So obviously, you have to have an
understanding of who your ideal customer is. If for example, it s 55-year-old plus women,
they are most likely to be using Facebook. So I would definitely recommend for a start
that you have a Facebook page. If you are after brands and media, then I would suggest
you need to be on Twitter because there are high uses of Twitter for example. In general,
I think every business needs a YouTube presence because video is extremely powerful. And even
if you don t initially start producing videos or you don t want to do them yourself, you
can demonstrate your products on there. You can tell a story very, very well through video.
So I always say to people, Where are your customers? Perhaps, they re all business-minded
executives and you re in recruitments so you want to be on LinkedIn. And then once you
ve got that more sorted in your mind, I always think it s best to just master one or two
tools before moving on to others. And where I see most people going wrong is they start
and they try and be on all of them and they don t actually have any goals. So they don
t say for example, With my Facebook page, I would like to get a 100 likes in the next
month. But more important than likes because that s just a metric as I would like 20% level
of engagement and a 30% click through rate to my services page for example. So they don
t set goals and then they don t track them. And without setting any goals and not tracking
them, you don t see any difference to what you re doing. So it s very un-motivating I
guess because you can t judge what s happening whereas I for example, know that Facebook
is my biggest driver of traffic to my website followed by Twitter followed by YouTube followed
by StumbleUpon. So knowing that, I can see where people have clicked, which pages they
ve come through to and what s working less effectively. So it gives me a really great
insight into how I should be better using those tools. Beryl: Where you should be putting
your efforts, yeah. OK. Natalie: Yeah. And then the other thing is just around discipline.
So, I get sucked into a black hole of social media but I have a couple of tools that actually
stop my internet time using these sites. One on what s called Freedom. It actually stops
the internet so you can t be looking around on Facebook and Twitter and wasting your time.
And the second thing is to really have a schedule so know that you can check in late morning,
mid-afternoon, and evening which are the predominant times when most people are on social media.
So that s another way to look at it as well. Beryl: What was that tool called again? Natalie:
Well, what was the tool? It s called Freedom, ironically. Beryl: OK. Natalie: There is one
for there is quite a few for PCs but one is called LeechBlock and I believe you can set
up which sites you want to block at which time of the day. So if you know that around
3:00 o clock, you tend to jump on Facebook and get consumed by the news feed, you can
stop that right now. Beryl: OK. So, your clients tend to be mainly women. So what do you think
where do you think women have most of their challenges with creating an online business
or any kind of business? Natalie: Yeah, great question actually. I believe from looking
at a lot of research and talking to so many clients, the biggest thing is around mindset
in playing a bigger game. So, a lot of women start a business either out of a hobby or
because they re quite passionate about it but what they ll end up building is kind of
what I d like to call, a jobby . It s kind of a hobby and a job so they don t end up
having a business that they can scale or one that runs without them. Instead, what they
get is kind of like a full-time job where they re probably paying themselves less and
doing more work than ever. That s not all women obviously but a lot of women go and
they really want to help people so they don t necessarily always charge for their time
and when they do, they undercharge. They often over deliver but they re not really getting
paid for the amount of work that they re really doing for those clients. Actually, I have
a client right now who is doing that exact thing. She feels guilty charging money for
the services that she does. So, we have these strange hang ups about wanting to help people
and give of our time and really connect with people rather than often thinking from more
of a hard knows aspect which is, ve invested in myself and my skills and my mindset and
my knowledge and that has value to it and I need to charge accordingly. Because the
more money that you can bring in to your business, the more you can invest back into it and into
your clients so it really makes sense. I d say, that s probably one of the number one
things. It s not necessarily thinking about how big you want to grow your business and
how you can scale it and how to remove yourself from it eventually. Beryl: So a lot of self-worth
issues come up for women I think as they start to get into business maybe particularly if
they ve been home with children and this is something new that they re starting. Natalie:
Definitely. And I know because I ve been there as well and you alluded to my video earlier
that I put out today which is all about mindset and whatever the mind can conceive and believe
it can achieve. And it sounds so simple and beautiful from Napoleon Hill but the thing
is that we don t often have a grand enough picture for what we really want. So we limit
our thoughts and our thinking about what our ideal lifestyle looks like and that s exactly
what we get because we re limited and confined by our thoughts. And it does take work. I
think it takes work, it takes reading up on things, it takes mentoring, coaching, up-scaling,
and really believing in yourself and that you re worth more than what you re charging
for example, that you can create your perfect business. Beryl: And isn t there something
around I think this paradigm shift in understanding and believing more importantly that the internet
is an incredibly powerful resource for us that we can leverage to build an incredible
business. And I think for many of us, it s been hard to recognize quite what you can
do. It seems in a way, too easy. I know it s work but do you know what I m saying? Natalie:
Yeah. In fact, I love this topic so much because I m constantly looking at the new trends that
are coming and I just sit in on a four-hour webinar the other day that I paid for to learn
more about the trends for now and into the future. And it is absolutely crazy that you
can start a business for less than a $100 these days. You can buy a domain. Get a WordPress
theme set up, have an email list and that s literally all you need. You need something
that people are willing to pay you for. It could be your own services. It could be your
design skills. And you could create an ebook in a weekend. So it s quite incredible and
none of these costs half as much as it used to for a traditional brick and mortar business.
And on top of that, you get to go global straight away because there is a global audience online.
There s no limit to the amount of countries and languages that you can reach through your
work. It s just incredible. Beryl: So that makes me think about mentoring because we
ve been we swam in that sea of information. It all s coming at you from all directions.
And what would your advice be, I know you run certain programs and I suspect you re
going to say, mentoring is the answer. I ve answered that question for you. But would
you like to expand on that? How you stopped feeling overwhelmed by the greatness of how
of what this can be and the massive information you find your way through to create something
amazing, which is entirely possible as you have done? Natalie: Yeah. I like to call it
going on a low information diet actually. For example, I don t actually watch the news.
And a lot of people are like, Why not? And I was like, Because I find it ridiculously
depressing. And if there is something really important, people will actually tell you about
it in the street. So I prefer to just read and consume resources, videos, audio, books
and blog posts from people that I really respect and admire. And what I ve done through a lot
of time and effort is just, I pull people that don t meet those standards. So generally,
I will click on links and read things. And if somebody really strikes my interest then
I will sign up to their newsletter or read their books. But the minute somebody is not
delivering the information that I need anymore, I m pretty quick to unsubscribe or cut them
out of my daily intake. And so, I think you need to be really mindful about your time
and how precious it is and only spend it learning from the best of the best or people that you
want to emulate. So that s one thing. It s trickier said than done. But it s also about
streamlining where you get your information sources from. So that s one way. And then
yeah, mentoring is definitely a way. Mentoring and coaching is definitely a way I think to
get to where you want to be a lot more quickly. And I wish when I had started, I d hired a
coach. To be honest, I probably didn t really have the income at the time. I went for no
income was no income for around six months. The last thing I was going to do was spend
what seemed like a lot of money with a coach. But looking back, if I had, it wouldn t have
taken me 18 months to get to where I wanted. It probably would have taken me four or five
just because the investment you re making returns dividends over and over because they
have the knowledge that you need right now but they have acquired it over many more years
so they can get you from A to B a lot more quickly than you could through trial and error.
And I still think there is a good amount of people who need to do more trial and error
like learning the back end of your website and doing some of those things I think is
really, really helpful initially. And then you can actually pass those off to people
once you know more about it and outsource the work that you just don t enjoy so you
can focus on doing your best work. So yeah, I d say, low information diet and then reaching
out to mentors or coaches for the right kind of help that s going to accelerate you on
the areas that you really need the most help on. Beryl: So can I just ask you then, what
you see difference being between mentors and coaches? Natalie: Yeah, great question actually.
A mentor is usually somebody that you don t pay. Well, you pay I guess a coffee or a
dinner to get some of their time. So that would be like for me, I would love to sit
down with Anthony Robbins, one of the biggest personal development coaches. And likely,
I ll probably get a coffee time. But if I could get ten minutes with him, I would ask
him for advice and he d do that as a mentor. So if you are in your local town, there are
often business chapters and associations where people who have done very well in business
are now happy to lend their advice and information to you. And you can usually try and tie in
a set schedule each month where you get half an hour on the phone with them or half an
hour coffee or just a short amount of their time to really help you on one particular
area that you re stuck on. So I would say that you must build your network as well.
A lot of people choose mentors who could eventually potentially invest in their company or just
introduce them to the right people. And then of course, somebody that usually pay because
I have specific skill set or knowledge-based on what you are attempting to do. So if you
want to learn more about online marketing, you can hire an online marketing coach. If
you wanted to get past your limitations on earning money, you would hire probably more
of a coach with a psychological bent or an [indiscernible] [0:19:23] training and really
go deeper into the psychological aspect. Potentially, you might want to hire like a personal trainer
to get more fit so you had more help. So those are the kind of people that you pay for specific
plan of attack and to know packages and a set kind of structure on how they take you
month to month through the way you want to go. Beryl: Now, what about scalability? Because
when you started your blog, you started it in a small way I m sure, how did you start
to scale that blog? Because again, it s mind shift for many people to grow business as
organically as you can. What are your tips there? Natalie: I wish that I had treated
my blog like a business from day one. So my tip to all my clients is take it seriously.
Obviously, have fun with it but take it seriously. So a lot of people just had a blog a little
bit like writing a journal. They sometimes write in it, they sometimes don t. Then they
put it aside for a while. They may come back to it and write in a flurry. And they kind
of wonder why people aren t sticking around. So the biggest thing was taking myself seriously
and saying, Actually, this is not just a blog. This is a platform from which I can build
my brand and my business. And then the second thing was once again coming back to goals
actually. What are your goals for this? How big do you want to be? How much traffic do
you want? How much of a brand name do you want to be out there? What are the purposes
does your blog have? So that was a really fantastic start. And the final thing if I
m just giving three chips was recognizing that by writing great content on my site was
not going grow my blog at all unless other people were seeing it. So the social media
is obviously one way of getting the word out but you re still getting it out to your immediate
community and friends of friends of friends which is a great start. But it wasn t until
I ve had a guest posting on pretty major sites that I realized that s when I was getting
the traffic back, that s when I was getting a rush of new sign-ups. So I always like the
analogy of if you want to bring people back to your bar or back to your house for a night
cap, you first got to go along to the party, network, connect with people, be the life
of the party, and then take them back to your place which sounds a little bit old but it
really is. A lot of people operate just in silo on their blog and wonder why they don
t have any new visits or comments and that s because there are 200 million plus blogs
out there who, as we just said, are overwhelmed and they re looking all over the place. So
it s unlikely that they re going to find you on the off chance. You really need to go out
and engage with your community, where they are and then bring them back. And once they
re there, you have to have amazing content and value so that they ll stick around and
sign up and be a regular person in your community. Beryl: And this is part of the brand-building,
isn t it? This is what you re doing while you Natalie: Yeah, definitely. Well, it s
part of building your own personality, your brand, and your business depending on which
way you re going. I mean some people don t need this necessarily to build that but they
still have to have a great understanding of online marketing and all the aspects of the
sales funnel from the very first visit to your site right through to them actually connecting
and buying your products or working with you. So it s something that takes a long time.
Beryl: OK. So say I was one of our viewers let s say, was watching this right now and
think, That all sounds fantastic. That sounds so exciting. I would love to do that. But
I don t have an idea for business. I d love an online business but I have no idea what
I could do on an online business. What would you say to that person? Natalie: That s a
great question. I love that you get it a lot. So a lot of people think they should just
have this incredible idea but the biggest thing that you ve got to really look at and
how most great businesses are formed is that they have filled a gap in the market or a
pain point that somebody is held. So sometimes you ve gone out shopping and for example,
you just don t really like the plastic bags that they give in the supermarket, so you
ve gone home and you researched online, well, what s a better plastic bag that also, I m
able to put my keys in for example. It s recyclable. I can take it along. That s just one kind
of example. But then you could go online and you could source what they called drop shipping
avenues so it s China factories that do these things for you. They make it to spec and you
have them produce first and sending them out and then you can start an online blog or you
could even use something like just PayPal and having a page where you showcase these
and literally start spreading the word about these great new bags that you have. Now, if
it s enough of a problem for other people and they re experiencing that same pain, the
word is going to get out because people can be like, Look, I found these great bags. They
re stylish. They re trendy. They re recyclables. They re light-weight. They re functional.
And they re only XYZ and you can find them on this person s site. So maybe a little bit
of a silly example but honestly, it s often looking into a market and saying, What is
the pain point there? And I know a lot of people have often no experience in the market
that they ve gone into but just by having enough conversations of constantly hearing
people whining about something, they ve gone, Well, hang on. Maybe there s a way that I
can solve this problem. So that s how a lot of products and services have come about.
And often, it s not what you re most passionate about or love doing which I think is a bit
of myth. It s often about like what is some way that I can solve somebody s problem and
be of service to them? Beryl: Fascinating. Melanie: But for you, it was you just loving
what you re doing and then it emerged into a product. Natalie: Yeah. But it did come
out of a need because I was oh gosh, how do you use all these social media tools? And
then when people started seeing that I was doing quite well with them and could explain
things to them in a way that made sense. They go, I just don t understand this concept.
And I would be like, Oh well, if you break it down it s just XYZ. And they would be like,
oh. So people that I ve chatted to were often quite interested in the way that I could describe
things simply to them or break down what seemed complex. So I guess doing that I realized
that after these conversations was I could make the technical much more simple and understandable
to non-techy person. And so, I created social media workshop to give people that insight
and turn that into a product. So my product did come out of a need through the conversations
that I was having. It would have been something quite [inaudible] [0:25:42] with skill and
it came naturally. I mean I still learn and apply things but it come naturally to me and
I just assume that other people have the skills, right? But that s where a lot of them get
wrong. They re good at something and they enjoy it and so they think, Oh well, I m just
good at it naturally. They don t actually see that as an asset that other people really
admire and would probably pay money for. Melanie: So, the other thing I m curious about is you
say that you wish that when you first started your blog, you treated it like a business.
Obviously, you didn t realize or didn t know. Now, as you started to treat it as a business
and it became more popular and it began to be the avenue for products, et cetera, did
the time ever happened when you were you run out of time for the whole thing took you over?
Natalie: As in it became my life? Melanie: Yeah. And how would you manage that? Natalie:
There was a period where all I was doing was community building and I just felt like I
was writing content everywhere and engaging and spending all my time and I wasn t earning
a dime. And it was this point where I could have done it 24 hours a day because I loved
it so much but I was getting to this point where I was like, Well, this is not making
me money. And incidentally, it then did. It wasn t until I step backed and went, Well,
hang on. Could I do less of this but more strategically? Could I post blogs that I really
wanted? Could I actually produce another product instead of spending all this time engaging
and then have something else to sell in addition to this one product. And by that stage, I
ve done so much work on the community and engagement that it actually drove a lot of
traffic to my site. And it s just that sometimes things take time. So people are always looking
for instant gratification but you have to put in the ground work and then lay the foundation.
So in many ways, I was glad I did that work and it did pay off in the immediate future.
But I think the way to stop that which is very difficult when you have an online business
because you can work on it [inaudible] [0:27:46] really disciplined about your day. You get
up in the morning and you do your rituals whether that is meditation and go and do your
workout straight away and then produce your content or work on your client proposals before
you check email and social media. And then you do social media and then you come back
to your projects, the next thing on your list. A little bit more engagement then back. And
then you cut yourself off at a certain time of day whether if you have kids, it s when
your kids come home or when your partner comes home. For a single person like me, it s very
easy to just keep on working. So I will put plans into my evening to go out and do things
or hang out with friends but I know that s my cutoff. So I think that s the way to manage
and not filling up your day with things because you can always be tweaking your blog and you
can always be spending your time doing something. It s absolutely mind-blowing. So the question
I ask myself on a good day is, is this activity that I m doing right now taking me closer
to my goal or if it s not, put it away. Beryl: That s a great discipline. Melanie: It is.
So I take it, you have both women and men who are very interested in the products although
we ve been talking about the importance of helping women to be more effective and productive.
So I m wondering, is it traditionally the men who tend to be a bit more disciplined
about the business than the women or does it not matter? Natalie: Listen, I do I love
working with both men and women. And I m just more passionate that women have a greater
place in this world and we re under represented in businesses although that is growing a lot
which is great. But with men, what I see is they re very good at focusing on one thing
whereas women can multitask and do a ton of different challenges. Men are not as adept
to that. But out of that, comes the singular focus on one thing. And they re also better
at delegating I find. So they re very good at knowing, Well, I m lousy at doing that
so I m not even going to attempt to try and learn and waste my time on it. I m just going
to delegate that. Whereas women are like, Well, maybe I should be able to do all these
things. I should be great at marketing and sales and admin and financials. Or they take
a little longer to reach out and ask for help. So I think men are just good at going, m just
going to connect with this person and they can do me a favor and I ll do them a favor
and we re off. So that will be the key differences that I found. Melanie: So, women are more
inclined to be overrun by time from wanting to be that helpful to everyone and everything.
Natalie: Well, I don t want them to be super [inaudible] [0:30:20] control freaks and I
don t [inaudible]. Sometimes they re their own worst enemies and I know that I like to
control the things in my business but I ve realized the more that I build a team of people
who are smarter than me or just as talented or can do other things, the better off I am
at being able to focus on growing the business and putting more back into it. Beryl: And
actually, that s a very easy thing to do, isn t it? With an internet business to outsource
to a VA and all kinds of things you can outsource. Of course, you don t have any full-time employees.
There are people that will happily do hourly work for you. Natalie: Yeah, exactly. I have
a virtual assistant who does around 10 to 12 hours a week for me and she is based in
India and she s fantastic so she does full manning of my blog posts, some formatting
around my email campaigns. She answers blog post queries on my site and any emails that
just aren t useful for me to look at. She ll be helping me on projects when I m putting
content together and does a lot of that. It s a little detailed work that s important
but it s not a great use of my time. And then I have a project manager who I m just bringing
on to be part-time but who s been actually if I say here s a project I want to work on,
she ll run with it and manage a lot more of it. So I m really wanting to build her up
and mentor her into somebody who can take care the parts of my business. And I have
a podcast editor. For example, so I would record my podcast episodes but I ll hand off
the editing and final formatting for them. So that s just another thing that I don t
need to be doing and [inaudible] [0:31:59] my list of my hourly rate. Of course, I have
an hourly rate. So, it s really smart but it does take a while to find the right team
members and to have the ability to give that over and go OK even if they don t do this
[inaudible]. Beryl: This is just the conversation Melanie and I have been having this morning
about that trust element. Melanie: Exactly. Beryl: Yeah. This is very personal like that.
Melanie: Very timely. Beryl: Yes. And this control issue. Could they possibly do it as
well as I can? Well, you re going to have to just let them try on you. Natalie: Yeah.
Melanie: I take your sorry, carry on. Natalie: What can happen, I ve had a few lists and
brilliant responses or sometimes my VA has done something else like, Oh, I wouldn t have
done that. But it hasn t harmed anything. It s never been offensive to any customers.
And really, it s just my expectations are here and I just maybe haven t trained her
yet or given her the right information so often it comes back to me just going, Oh,
I probably wasn t clear enough on my briefing around that. m just continually setting those
expectations of the standard that you want and then they really if they re the right
person, they ll rise up and meet that and do a great job. Beryl: And if you have systems
in place, our mentor is a great one for making sure we have systems in place so that anyone
can really pick that up and run with it. Natalie: Definitely. Systems are huge and I think a
lot of women as well shy away from that a little. They like to do lots of things but
the easiest thing that I found is just saying well for example with my blog post, I do it
every single day or at least I used to. I used to format it and put it all in. So one
day, I decided to record it using Camtasia but you can use something like Jing or screencast
and I just recorded what I was doing and talk through why I was putting in the keywords
and the tags and the formatting. And then I saved that as a file and I sent it to my
VA and said, Watch this video. Type out notes that make sense to you and this is your training
from now on. So anybody else who comes in can look at the same video. They can see her
updated notes and they can follow the instructions on what they need to do. So it took maybe
extra ten minutes for me to video it and talk through to it. And that ten minutes now saved
me an entire job of having to show somebody. So a little like that is really smart, just
using your time wisely. Using certain tools like Asana, which is a free project management
tool and that s where I put all my jobs that I need doing. She can put complete or move
or schedule or comment, questions, ask questions on it but it s all in one place and one dashboard
and that s where we go to look at what we need to work on. Beryl: What was that called?
Asana? Natalie: Asana, A-S-A-N-A. Beryl: OK. Natalie: It s very simple and easy to use
like type and enter, which is great. Beryl: And actually, on that point where you say,
simple and easy to use, why is it women and I include myself, I m not so bad now but I
was pretty shocking, have this fear of this technology and you think, Oh God! I ve got
this machine now and it s just full of stuff I don t understand and I ll never get the
hang of, why are we like that and how do you help people through that? Natalie: I like
that because you make it more complex than it is and rather than just Googling things
or looking it up, we kind of don t want to take the extra time to learn it so we just
view it as this kind of insurmountable problem. I have one of my clients the other day who
hadn t even used Google Docs which I live on and she said, How do I upload a Google
Document? And I went, You Google how to upload a Google Doc. I know it sounded so mean but
I sent her the link. I was like, It can t be any more simple but also, here is a step-by-step
instruction that Google have written on how to upload a document. So I often find people
are just lazy or fearful of finding the answer because that answer means maybe they have
to learn something new then they have to apply it. So I just have this insatiable curiosity
to figure out things for myself but I m not a coder, I m not a developer. There are definitely
limitations to what I can do but where possible, I will try and answer my own question before
going out to ask people on Twitter or Facebook or my friends. Beryl: Because there is logic
to these things, aren t there? My son helped me through it. He said when I was sitting
and looking at some of that screen for trying to get it to work and he said, Mom, it s a
system. There s logic to it. They way they put this together so you just have to go through
these steps and not rush because if you miss a step then you re done for. Natalie: Yeah.
I think a lot of the tools are really recognizing that now and trying to simplify as much as
possible. Take out all the fancy features and just make it so intuitive that when you
log on to use it or start using it like OK, click here, account change or save. And honestly
outside of that, I think a lot of women that I know just immediately assumed that they
don t know how to do it. Beryl: Exactly. Natalie: Which is never true. Beryl: It s never true
because all skills are learnable if we just take the time and start believing that s possible.
Natalie: Yeah. If my dad and mom can use Skype and I got to get them to transfer something
to Dropbox the other, it had taken an hour and we just [inaudible] [0:37:04] but he managed
to transfer a whole lot of files through Dropbox which I was very proud of him and he is in
his 70 s so patience and mom so anybody can do it. Beryl: Fabulous, fabulous. I know a
lady of 90 who emails her family all over the world. I couldn t believe it. She said,
ll have to go and do my emails now. And I m thinking, Oh lordy. OK. Well Natalie, this
has been a fabulous conversation, very, very rich in content. Just one last thing I d like
to ask you. What and let me take you back to that webinar you re on about the trends,
can you give us some insights into where the trends are so people can get excited about
getting on board with all of these? Natalie: Yeah. I m super excited actually. So there
was a mountain of trends with some of which I knew but I guess applications and tools
where I just talked about it are getting more simple to use but also, integrating with other
tools. So it s quite likely if you re using online banking for example, it will integrate
with other tools that you already naturally use, maybe on your smartphone or your computer.
In addition to that, making application and software even as a non-techy is going to be
easy. So there are now tools and applications to help you manage tools and applications
so this is a very interesting avenue. And you can do it lot more cheaply than even just
a couple of years ago. The other one that I m super excited about is online education
but more the way it s developing. So that you can use video and audio but it s more
tools coming out where you can have live integration, group coaching calls, integrated chat, embeddable
videos, there is something called social chat which you can be on Facebook, invite your
friends and have a video where everybody can be seen on the video like a Google Hangout
but it s there on Facebook. And you don t need any special software application on your
computer. You just need to be on Facebook. But one of the most exciting trends is and
I think this has come from everybody starting to get a little bit jaded by being so connected
all the time is this kind of trend to go back to in-person retreats and events which I m
really excited about. But not just conferences, more very interactive events where you re
getting access to people personally one-on-one. But the smart people, people that you really
admire, a lot more this need for intense groups and workshops and even some events that are
getting you offline again but using the tools to get you there in the first place which
is kind of ironic really because it s what we used to do before we had all these tools.
So it s nice to see this trend to go back it to because I personally love the one-on-one
interaction in-person with people but I just think trends are going to be smarter. So there
was only once and not into augmented humanity and things like 3D printers and how that s
going to affect ecommerce and what we can buy, et cetera. I mean that was just crazy
stuff. But basically, the world is getting smaller. It s getting much more accessible
and we re able to do so many more things now for so little. So it s very exciting and all
of it can be done from a laptop and a smartphone which is perfect because that s my business
model. Beryl: So tell us what you have in the pipeline, what you have to offer your
audience, Natalie. Natalie: Well, I m really excited because next year, I m fully focused
on the first quarter of writing my book which will be called the Suitcase Entrepreneur and
it s through conversations like this that I ve realized the book needs to be about how
do you get started using these tools, how do you take your business mobile, how do you
decide on the systems and preferences that you need to run your business, and then how
do you free up more of your time and save more money from doing that as well as some
of the fun things like why do you choose this and how can you do this more easily and what
does your lifestyle look like? So that s one of my things and from that I think will come
a number of interesting projects including working with some bigger corporates not just
entrepreneurs and literally looking at their business as if it s an entrepreneurial business
again. So, taking these bigger corporates and thinking, Well, how can you be more mobile
and flexible and take more of your workforce virtual so that they can tap into some of
these new trends as well and save the corporation lots of money? So that s one thing. And then
my Women Entrepreneurs Mastermind that I run with Natalie McNeil. We re planning on making
that even bigger and better next year, getting hundreds more members through that and running
another in-person retreat because as we know, in-person retreats and events are the way
that people really want to connect with you. So we just ran one in the Caribbean in November
and it was a big success and we re going to be doing one again next November also in the
Western Caribbean. So those are my I pretty much have those three plans for next year,
the book writing, the big program launch, and the retreat. So very focused, very focused
on helping more people. Beryl: Yet again, you re walking your talk. You re thinking
big. You re doing big. Melanie, do you have any final questions? Melanie: I just have
one final question about what you ve just been speaking about. So you talked about,
I expect that s a big program launch with bigger corporates, and how did you describe
it, in a sense looking at how they could be more mobile with their business, so I take
it this is something you ve already been working on. Natalie: Well interestingly, this has
come about through conversations so as much as I love working with entrepreneurs, I really
feel that companies could be really accessing my information so it would be more of a pivot
towards consulting with some higher retainer contracts that I can still reach the entrepreneurial
community with my products and group coaching. And there is something that I ve started working
on. There are a couple of clients who have approached me on it. And so, I ve just been
putting together how I think that would look. But in terms of a system and going into a
business right now, I haven t even begun to touch on that. I really wanted to write my
book first and delve into these big trends coming forward so that when I do start pitching
for that work, I m going to have a book to my name and also, be able [inaudible] [0:43:14]
more highly about the trends and the things that they really need to take note of. So
it s an exciting development but I think it makes sense with the background that I ve
had as well because I did enjoy working in corporates. I just felt restrained. So being
on the outside and being able to go in and help is going to be really fascinating. Beryl:
It sounds perfect for you. Melanie: It s very fascinating, yeah. So, in terms then of you
ve got all these exciting things happening and of course, you ve got products that people
can tap into at the moment to help run their businesses a lot more productively, do you
want to just quickly say what these products are and how people can get hold of you? Natalie:
Yeah. The two most popular, I tend to not have too many products and not overwhelm people
but the ultimate token for entrepreneurs is one of my favorites and one of the favorites
of my clients, there s a guide that has 85 of the top tools that you can use to streamline
your business and save time and money, one free and one paid. And then there s also a
premium site where there are a few more tools and a bit more information that people can
access. And then there s my popular BYOB Guide which is Build Your Online Business. It s
essentially my story but with a ton of helps so I ve kind of said how I went about growing
my business and the steps that you can do to take yours to the next level. But it s
written in a very informal, fun-loving way with lots of valuable tips and insights. So
there s a guide, there s an audio guide and then there s a premium guide. And social media
club as well which I love. It s a monthly club Facebook group where we share tips and
strategies. And I do one coaching call a month where I share the latest tips and strategies
and trends with the social media tools and how they can apply them. So that would be
the key ones that people seem to really enjoy and purchase the most from my site or engage
with me as a community member. Beryl: There s lots of free stuff on your site too. Natalie:
Yes, there s lots stuff where I do video. Beryl: You re very generous. You re very generous
and your YouTube videos are great too. So it s certainly worth a visit just because
there s loads of free stuff there for people. Natalie: Yeah. And see my podcasts as well
which I really enjoy. So every two weeks, I interview a really successful entrepreneur.
Generally, somebody who is an online entrepreneur or maybe they re a great [inaudible] [0:45:36].
So, I always try to bring in some variety and really pick their brains on how they ve
done what they ve done and how we can do that too. Beryl: And the name of your site is Natalie:
Well, it s actually just Suitcase Entrepreneur. Melanie: Nice and easy to remember. Beryl:
And your Facebook and Twitter as Suitcase Entrepreneur? Natalie: Facebook, it s Facebook.com/suitcaseentrepreneur
and on Twitter, it s @suitcasepreneur because entrepreneur is too long for Twitter to handle.
So @suitcasepreneur and also @nataliesisson but if they just Google Suitcase Entrepreneur,
they ll find me everywhere. Beryl: Well, thank you very much. Natalie: Thank you. Melanie:
Yes. It s certainly was very, very inspiring, very inspiring. It got me thinking about all
sorts of things. Natalie: Lots of questions as well. Melanie: So finally, final question.
Is there anything that if there was one thing you could advice people listening to this
who are feeling as inspired as we are and thinking, I need to pull myself up or pull
myself together on this or I need to stop doing something, what would be one bit of
advice you ll give them? Natalie: And you know what? I m going to leave you with a Yoda
quote today because I happen to love Yoda and I think you should always have fun in
your business. But I fell in love by a statement of, There is no try. There is only do or do
not. And I love that because on days where I m like, Oh, I ve been trying to do this.
I really catch myself out and say, there is no try. There is only do or do not. So for
all those people who make excuses, I ve been trying to do that for the last year or one
time, I m going to do this. I just say, do it now because life is short and you re here
to live a really great life. So you owe it [inaudible] [0:47:29] to the world. Beryl:
