Second Life is a fun and social space, so meeting and making friends is easier when
you understand the basic controls and options for chat.
First, click the chat button and if it is not already open expand "Nearby Chat." These
are all the nearby people you can text chat with. In most cases, only these people will
be able to read your text.
So, click the chat bar. Type something...and hit enter.
You can privately chat with anyone by simply right-clicking their name and selecting IM...that's
Instant Message.
Did you notice that some people also have dots near their name?
You can also talk in voice to anyone with a dot.
If you have a microphone connected to your computer, then you should be able to use the
Speak button — also located on the bottom of your Viewer.
Just click on it to start talking.
You’ll see some green waves above your head when you speak. This means others are hearing
what you say.
Start up a conversation and you may even make a good friend or two.
To “Friend” someone, just right-click on that person’s avatar (or their name on
a list) and select “Add Friend.”
Once they accept, you’ll see them appear in your “My Friends” list.
Give the friends and chat features a try, and have fun in Second Life.
