Mary Mackillop has been given one of the biggest honours
a Catholic could receive, she has been made a Saint.
She did a lot of work for underprivileged communities,
and was a devoted Catholic.
She was honoured at Vatican City,
and the masses gathered for the ceremony
officiated over by Pope Benedict XVI.
Saint Mary Mackillop is from Australia
but she did a lot of work in NZ, furthering education,
and supporting Maori throughout the country.
What they did was very honourable, teaching children
not only in the ways of the Church, but literacy and numeracy as well.
Some have been calling for her promotion to Sainthood
for some time, and there is relief it has finally happened.
The most important thing to her was keeping her faith,
which is something we can all learn from.
Saint Mary Mackillop was a teacher at Saint Joseph's School in Wairoa.
She died in 1909.
