The Young Artist Apprenticeship Program runs for six weeks and it’s an after school art-making
workshop for kids who are in high school. There are about 12 students and they work
with artist mentors. And artist mentors really work individually with each student. To see
the level of sophistication that the students’ projects attain is really fantastic. They
really start to be able to envision going to college and continuing their education.
The students are coming to our University of Houston campus, and they’re coming to
it and creating work every day, they’re seeing themselves as a vital part of the campus
life. We are very honored to receive a Coming Up Taller award for 2009. It’s given by
the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities.
