Current attraction and repulsion
A magnetic compass aligns following the earth's magnetic field.
However, magnets create a magnetic field that can change the compass orientation.
If we create a current next to the magnetic compass,
it generates a magnetic field that changes the orientation of the compass.
This is the basis of the attraction and repulsion between currents,
as currents are also affected by magnetic fields.
Here we have a couple of sheets of aluminium connected to copper tubes. 0:00:57.000,0:00:60.000 If we connect each side of the copper tubes to a current generator, 0:00:60.000,0:00:63.000 a current will pass through both sheets in the same direction. 0:00:63.000,0:00:66.000 This produces attraction between the conducting sheets. 0:00:66.000,0:00:69.000 If the current circulates in opposite directions, 0:00:69.000,0:00:73.000 the conducting sheets are repelled.
