Tangelwood fellows we just met play classical music surrounded by nature,
the students attending the Berklee City Music program perform pop and jazz
inspired by a lively urban setting.
And there are life lessons as well.

Summer in the city, time for school vacation.
But not at Berklee College of Music,
where the Five Week Summer Performance Program is in full swing.
Call it a giant jam session for some,
1000 high school students from around
the country and the world. They come here for intense
training that helps prepare them for college.

Included in this camp-like summer school
is a select group of 100 scholarship students from the
year round, Berklee City Music Network.
Creator and director Curtis Warner.
"We do specificaly train them so that they are ready
for the rigor of conservatory, instruction,
but we also try to make sure that there is a holistic experience
where their leadership skills are developed.
Make sure that they leave the program with great self-esteem."

"I defenetly just become a more seasoned performer.
Getting a lot of experience inside and outside of the classroom.
"I believe that music is my gift, like drums and everything,
and I really want to come to Berklee as a school"
"I used to be like really shy, and like I thought like it was competition,
but like now I realized that coming here is competition between me and myself."

"There is a beach you can almost feel in the pavement of Mass Ave."
Its the talent and energy oozing from these walls.
Berklee City Music was designed to fill in what public
schools programs leave out or cut out.
"When you think of teaming, most people think of athletics.
When you think of leadership, again you think about sports.
Those same skills are a part of the music education experience."

This is not about becoming the next Amerian Idol.
It is about giving young people a chance to perfect and persuit a passion.
While making music, they learn the business of music.
"They get smart real quick from being in this environment.
This camp is just like a microcosm of the entire entreteinment industry.'
"I want to be a producer and also performer"
"You get to be around a lot of genres, styles, you know,
open yourself up to a lot of different things in music."
"I've never been placed in an ensemble where like the first day we rehearsed
it sounded like already good."

"Sometimes you have students that are so scared,
you know, because they never performed in such setting.
Until they are once they get acclamaited at to what's going on,
then its like they all of a sudden they all lighten up"

They are ignited by working with mentors such as recording artist Chantel Hampton.

Students coming to Boston from other cities create videos of their journey.
15 year-old Steffanie Buret, is from Anaheim California.
"I cant wait to get to Boston, so I'll see you guys later"
Robert Goold flew here from Atlanta.
So exited he serenaded passengers on the plane.

He's been singing his heart out eversince.

At the end of the 5 Week Program there is a Scholarship Concert.
Today more than 120 City Music graduates have been
awarded full tuition to Berklee College of Music.

City Music opens many doors, all before this teens
have even graduated from high school.
And at the recent Scholarship Concert, Robert Goold,
who you just saw, was awarded a full 4 year scholarship
to Berklee College, and of all 16 Scholarships Awarded,
5 going to Boston area students.
