When you connect your card to the computer there is a tendancy
for people to want to delve within the folder structure, locate the video files
and drag these out - that’s actually the incorrect way to deal with the media
what we are going to do in this quick tutorial is actually back up
our media to our own drive and ingest into AVID as well
The folder we are going to copy across is this one here
the BPAV folder - that contains all the information, the metadata
video files and all the subfolders that we need to connect properly through AVID
Launch a new finder window or explorer on a PC
navigate to the drive where you want to copy your media to
the one thing to remember is not to save to the system drive
or to the local C drive if its a PC
create yourself a folder - I’m calling mine “rushes” as its on my external
it may be you are on a shared computer in the Uni
using the Media Drive or Save Work here, give it your name
As I said, I’m calling mine Rushes
as it’s on my own external drive
inside this folder, create a new folder
this is going to be the name of the project we are working on
then we can find media files more easily
mines called cosmology - inside create another new folder
and this will be called the “date of filming”
in this instance 2012 the month March and lastly
and the day 19 - so 2012 03 19
in this folder create a new folder
and this is for the first card coming in so I shall call it "card001"
just to reitterate - I’ve got my rushes folder...
I’ve then got the project folder, the date of shooting
then finally the card number as well.
It’s important then when you go over to the card you're backing up
you go into the file structure and select the folder called BPAV
copy that BPAV folder across
when its finished eject the camera card
Launch AVID
If you havent done so, create a new project
The standard settings we’ve been using
are 1080P at 25fps
A YCbCr 709 colour space
and finally
a 1920 x 1080 raster dimension
I’m going to name my new project within AVID
and press OK
To save elsewhere, such as an external
select the folder icon before creating your project
navigate where you want to save you projects
I have one on my external drive, with a folder called AVID Projects
and I save my work within there
with our new project created and selected
press OK to open it
AVID creates a bin on new project creation
just going to move it out of the way
Go up to FILE
and LINK TO AMA VOLUME - this is a volume we are bringing in
a whole load of videos, not an individual file that we are linking to
I’m going to navigate to my external drive
to my Rushes folder
within there into the cosmology folder
then Ive got the shoot date and my card is within
because of the way we are bringing this in to AVID
it’s best to select the date folder
and when we press open we are given a few choices
and if you choose “bin based on sub folders”
AVID will open every sub folder / card within that date folder
so if you have more than one card it will open more than one bin
named based on the folder
my bin has the same name as the folder “Card001”
you can see from the icon this is an AMA clip
what I like to do is load the footage and make sure it works OK
once I've review my footage to make sure its working OK
I'm going to select all items in this bin - you can do it by
going to the EDIT menu and SELECT ALL
or shift click to select the items in the bin
once done right click on the selected clips
go up to consolidate/transcode form the options that appear
at the very top choose Transcode
it tells me I have 8 clips selected
on the right set the resolution
DNxHD 120 - then over on the left
its showing me available drives
this includes my system drive which I dont want to use
I'll cancel this for now
I’m going to go up to the settings
and navigate to mediacreation
in here I can filter out the system drive
and launch drive as well
once ticked, press ok, select all clips in the bin
right click and choose condsolidate/transcode
you’ll notice the system drive isnt there
this is a good way to filter the C or D drive if you don’t want them
or the system drive on a Mac as well
I’ve chosen the drive I want, made sure settings are correct
I know I have enough space on the drive for the footage transcoding
and once happy press transcode
once finished it looks like double the amount of clips
it's created new files
these you can see have .new on the end
they can be identified by the video type...
also where the items physically exist
so this shows you where the media is
Create a new bin so the new clips can be moved
I’m going to call this one “card001 rushes”
and then click the first, shift click the last
and then move them to the other bin
Close the AMA bin and then deleted it from the project
this doesnt delete the original media, just removes the bin
I like to double to check things so will load up each clip
and make sure it plays back ok
thats every thing bought into AVID
transcoded and the project is ready to edit
the next thing will be more cards coming in
navigating back to finder
and where we stored our original media
when you have a new card for a shoot day, make sure you name
that card sequentially - our last card was 001...
this will be card002
and if we shot on a new day, we’d create a new date folder
and then within this create a new card
again carrying on sequentially from the last
in this instance it will be called card003
