>>NICHOLAS NG-A-***: My name is Nicholas Ng-A-***. I'm an associate professor in the
Faculty of Education. My field of research is Curriculum Studies. Research is important
for me because I see it being a huge privilege to work at a University institution to draw
on its resources, to try to learn more about how we can address and contribute to the needs
of different people outside the University.
>>RUTH KANE: I decided to nominate and support the application -- or the nomination -- of
Nicholas for this award, because I think he represents and epitomizes a young researcher
who goes above and beyond what a lot of people as researchers, as academics, do within the
faculty.
>>JULIE CORRIGAN: I first met Nicholas in his Intro to Curriculum Studies class, and
immediately, I was taken with his teaching style. I couldn't believe how he could make
a three hour class seem like it was over in just a minute. It was always engaging.
>>NICHOLAS NG-A-***: Research is always part of my teaching. So here at the Faculty, I
teach in a Bachelor of Ed program and also in the graduate studies program. Most of the
research that I've been doing with the Algonquin community in Kitigan Zibi has been through
a course called curriculum design and evaluation.
>>TRACY CROWE: I think he's unique because he is really very open to everyone. He treats
all that he works with -- all the students that he works with, all the faculty that he
works with, all the community partners that he works with -- with a genuine curiosity
and interest, and I think that is unique.
>>RUTH KANE: He has a very deep commitment to social justice, and an ethic of care and
respect, and has worked with his colleagues, with his students, and particularly when we're
talking about research with his graduate students.
>>TRACY CROWE: I think he won the award because he is an incredibly hard working individual.
He has contributed an awful lot. He's very modest, he's very humble about his accomplishments,
but he is a prolific writer, and he certainly has offered it an awful lot to the faculty.
>>NICHOLAS NG-A-***: For me, this award really validates the importance the faculty sees
in terms of harnessing the resources that it has, to try to answer some of the questions
that communities like the Kitigan Zibi are trying to address, but don't necessarily have
the resources to do so. And so, it acknowledges our partnerships and collaborations, and my
hope is that, in some sense, the award itself will present something for others to look
toward, toward the future, in terms of the kind of research we can do in the faculty,
and that is supported and validated.
