I love Art and I think you do too, and if you dont think you love art i going to try
to explain why you should. The love of art is one of the things that separates us from
animals, consider that when an animal finds an object it asks itself is it dangerous ?, can
I eat it ?, is it useful?. Human beings ask these same questions but also ask is it beautiful.
Our earliest ancestors loved art. Cave paintings show that our ancestors painted hunting scenes,
animals, and paintings of each other. 40,000 years ago long before we domesticated dogs or cattle
or horses or invented agriculture our ancestor made art. Cave sites show small sculptures so
early man clearly made art and loved doing so. So what is art what is it for , can ir be
defined ? . I beleive at its most fundamental art is the power of expression. Mankind needs
to express himself as a matter of survival. He needs to express himself collectively,
we need to know that we are on the same page and that we share an empathic view of the
world, a shared reality. Art does this it lets us express our fears or hopes or aspirations and our dreams.
Some art does this beatifuly some does not , but however art does this if it did not
we would all be very lonely and quite possibly quite mad. So why should we love art, whats
the big deal ?. Well it is a big deal. In order to understand why we love art we need
to understand a little bit about the visual cortex. We need to understand a little about how we see and how we decipher what
we see. It seems that in general the world is a complex place and much of the nformation
we receive is not relevent. Our brain has to determine what is relevent and what is
not. This is hard work for the brain. A drawing or painting on the other hand however well
executed is a massive distillation of visual data. A drawing or painting gets right to
the point and it seems our brains like this shortcut, this day off. And in fact this short
cut pleases us it gives us pleasure, it is easy for us as humans to love something that
gives us pleasure. Now when we come to judge art as we all do one way or another we often
use some florid language some arty language, for example does the artist convey his intent
, is the work executed with bravura or is it a pleasing composition. All these questions
are very important but they are not essential to the love of art. All we have to do is ask
ourselves two fairly simple questions almost primitive questions. Does the art please us,
is it beautiful. these are the questions our ancestors would have asked. so now that you
know how to judge art, perhaps in an elementary way but nonetheless quite an adaquate way.
You should go out and get some art. Surround yourself with beautiful things. beautiful
things enhance us they enrich our lives and give us a shared experience with the people
we surround ourselves with. they give us something to talk about. So go out and get yourself
some art. it does not have to be grand or expensive just something you like. My next
video deals with the important art of portraiture. portraiture is an important art form and has
been around a very long time reaching its zenith during the renaisance and later. As
we have heard mankind has painted portraits since he first started creating art. so if
