Hi Caro here from offline Hero's Method.
Now I've spoken to you previously about traffic and just touched on the difference between
local keyword research and say the internet marketing, online niche marketing and so forth
and when you are actually targeting local offline business clients.
Also the other thing I want to talk about today is actually competition; how you assess
your competition from an internet marketing perspective. I think two key points is, when
I am looking at something for a local client and it's to do more with organics, so I am
not talking local listings here but it's more organic, I tend to be driven the same way
I am from a global prospective. I am looking for minimal number of competing pages.
So if that’s my first entry point I am definitely looking for that and you know there is many
tools out there. One of the tools that I really love is Market Sumurai and look at what they
call the Competition Ratio Matrix in that.
There's also Micro Niche Finder which has a way to assess this and you can also do it
manually. With everything we do in OHM we offer you the free tools as well, but I'll
just say as an aside, don’t be afraid to invest in tools to help you do your job more
easily because it's an investment into your business. That aside there is always free
tools to everything.
So for competing pages, I do like to see a low number and what we use on a global perspective,
so if I was going for a niche, we tend to say if you are looking for a quicker result
30,000, not more than 30,000 competing pages for key word phrase, and then if you are a
more experienced internet marketer, and you know you are not looking for instant results
- not that you will get an instant result with seo and that's important to know, I will
also go up to 100,000 competing pages.
Now with local, you are talking to begin with with your country whether that is US, UK,
South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, France, Germany, whatever part of the world you are
in. so you are searching on that basis in your country and then you would actually want
ideally a lower number of competing pages. Now again this is if I am going organic. If
I am going local the main thing I am looking for and I must probably do a separate video
for this, is actually to see that there's local listings already for the key word phrase
I am targeting. That’s the most important thing as opposed to the number of competing
pages for a key word phrase I am targeting for local. So sometimes the key word phrase
that you target for your organic and the one that you target for local could be two different
key word phrases.
So as an internet marketing consultant for your offline client, it’s important that
you are looking for the best result for them and really as the rule of thumb the least
number of competing pages the better because what that means is it’s just more competitive,
it’s going to take more time. Also what competing pages mean is that they are competing
for the particular keyword phrase that you are targeting as well.
So I hope that little snippet has been informative for you. It’s just really to move you from
how you may have been taught how to do things on a global perspective and then the differences
in local. So, always lower number of competing pages the better. We focus in organic pretty
much the same we do global but we want less, a lot less and what we are looking at, I’d
be wanting well under 30,000. You know 10,000 would be great when I am looking in that country.
If you've got something with the actual city name in, again that is often even better for
there'll be less competition. For local listings: not so concerned about the number of competing
pages. It’s just really how things are working online at the moment. Knowing that Google,
with Google we all have to be ready to evolve and change based on how Google evolves and
changes.
I hope this has been informative and I will talk to you really soon. Take care. Bye
