We are at Balu-Ka-Gera. Now there is lots of misconception why this place is called
Balu-Ka-Gera. And you should know about it. Balu-Ka-Gera has got nothing to do with “Balu”
or bears. Balu means sand and as you can see we are in a very sandy location. These are
mud settled on sand. But if you follow behind me this is sand. We are on sand. And that’s
why this place is called Balu-Ka-Gera. Balu-Ka-Gera means where sand settles.
We are at 12,000 feet. And even in mid May as we are now, you will see the place surrounded
by snowy flanks all around us. If you look on your left and on your right these are perma
frost area and there are snowy flanks around us.
Balu-Ka-Gera is a wide river bed actually – where the Rani river flows on our right,
in between and even on our left. It kind of branches out at Balu-Ka-Gera. This was actually
the river bed on where we are camping.
And today’s trek is to Hampta Pass which is right behind us. This way is Hampta Pass.
