Columbia University Copyright Advisory Office offers a printable
Four Factors checklist for Fair Use. This is a valuable tool.
The Fair Use determination requires consideration of four factors:
the purpose of the use, the nature of the material, the amount of the material to
be used, and the effect on the market of using the material.
Under each category, you can see the factors that favor and oppose Fair Use
for your consideration.
Print this sheet and fill it out completely to help determine what favors
or does not favor Fair Use of a work. If there was ever a challenge, you could use
the checklist to show that due consideration was provided in making
your decision.
Moving further down the page, you will also see multiple crash courses that are
also available to help you become more familiar with copyright and Fair Use.
And finally, if you have a question regarding copyright, seeking permissions,
transformative use, or other concerns, you are welcome to contact me, Patricia
