It was my first day in KAS, and it was my first day to play basketball.
The sport was introduced to me by my friend Todd. Todd and I knew each other before I entered this school.
In the beginning of my KAS student life, I did not know how to make new friends because It was my first time to study at Taiwan.
I did not have many friends that I could hang out with, and I couldn’t understand my teacher said in the beginning because I had not learned much english in Japan.
So the environment, language and social life were all new to me.
Todd was an important person for me to learn all the new things such as socializing with other people and adapting to the life style of taiwan.
I remembered that day at school, Todd came to me and invited me to play basketball with his friend.
I was very excited, because I knew that I could make new friends.
So, I went to basketball court and I saw many people playing at that time
The players on the court surprised me for their skills of playing basketball and they were all better than me.
There was a talented guy who was very good at basketball and seem like we were both in the same grade.
When I looked at him,
I thought he was not only the leader of that game
but also he look like a leader of the basketball group.
I thought I could imitate him to learn how to play basketball and making friends.
He was my inspiration of playing basketball.
But at that time, I was too afraid to play with Todd’s friend so I went to other court that was easier and look like it was in my level.
After that day, I thought I could look up to him and hopefully one day I could play as good as he was.
So, I stayed at the court everyday after school to practice basketball
Every time when I played with different kinds people, I will be able to learn something new.
Some of them are junior and some are seniors, and they guided and showed me where my weaknesses are,
so that I could improve.
My teacher also helped me and introduced me to the JVB coach.
He gave me a chance to get more experience by joining their team and watch them play.
Although, I spend much more time sitting on the bench than running on the court,
I was already satisfied that I could watch and learn some of the tactics.
These experience were so important to me, because it helped me to get used to the tempo of the game
and I could understand more about tactics that opposite team uses.
So I could’t be less nervous when I’m playing on the court.
The experience of learning from the bench paid off when 8th grade tournament came to the final.
My team an I played wonderfully and won the champion title of the year.
It was my first champion and I guessed it certainly has something to do with daily practice and coach’s advice.
Therefore, I believe that work hard did paid off.
But not long after, I was under estimated by some senior teammates
because they thought I was not better than some other seniors who didn’t get picked.
However, I did not make to the final ten players of varsity team in the end.
I turn this negative situation into my motivation. To work hard everyday for next try out.
When I got into tenth grade, I got another chance to try out to be a player of varsity.
I treasure this opportunity and finally made it into finals.
Although, we did not win the championship again, but we have given our best effort and did not regret the result.
After all, it was not to bad to have second place in the season.
I learned a lot of experience during the games, and had a lot of fun during that time.
Looking back at my basketball career, from a basketball beginner to a little bit better player,
the journey was hard as every time I practiced,
but it all pays off and worth every second of it.
I’m not saying that I’m the best player, because there are a lot of better player are work harder than me.
But at least I can say that I improved from 8th grade.
If a beginner like me could play in a varsity team through continuous working hard,
then I think everyone with extra persistency and focus on the subject they work,
everyone can learn and improve from a beginner to a better player.
I believe everyone can do better than me if you believe in yourself, work hard and believe that it will pays off one day.
