Hi, my name is Michelle O’Dierno. I’m the woman’s health nurse practitioner at UB student health services.
You will be asked questions about your personal and family health history, smoking, drinking, drug use, and *** practices and partner preferences. This is important information that helps to determine your risk for certain illnesses like hypertension,
diabetes, and STI’s like ghoneria, Chlamydia, and ***. Your vital signs, like your weight, your blood pressure, your pulse will be taken. You will then be given a gown and asked to go into the bathroom and remove your clothing and put on the gown.
You can leave your socks on for comfort. After changing into the gown you will have a seat on the exam table. Your health care provider will fill your thyroid in the front of your neck and ask you to swallow. This helps assess the health of your thyroid.
Your abdomen or stomach will be filled for any irregularities. An important part of the GYN exam is checking your breast for any changes or lumps.
You will be shown how to do this yourself at home, and you should do it monthly the week after your period. You may also need a Pap test or pelvic exam.
