U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen says harsh weather, such as heavy snow and cold
snaps, played a role in the lower-than-forecast figures in the employment, retailing, and
manufacturing sectors. Yellen told a key Senate committee on Thursday
that Fed officials will look into the matter, as they are not sure how big the weather factor
is, and whether it will influence the tapering of the Fed's bond-buying program.
If plans stay on course, the Fed will trim its monthly bond purchases from 65 to 55 billion
U.S. dollars next month.
