[music] Hello, I'm Laura Sosnowski and I teach math to high school and college age students.
Welcome to another tutorial! I'd like to introduce you to ConnectMath.com, and show you some
ways that it can be useful to you in your study of math. This tutorial is intended for
students enrolled in my online 0481 math class however the information here can be useful
to anyone who is studying algebra. Today's Objectives are [read screen] Introduce the
features included in Connect Math, and learn strategies for inputting your answers. In
order to get onto the ConnectMath website you need to start by going to http://www.connectmath
(that's all one word) dot com. And that should take you here to this signon screen. In order
to sign on you will enter your login name and your password that you received your registration
papers you received when you registered for this class. I'm going to click LOGIN right
here. Your screen might look a little different than mine in some places because I am signing
on as an instructor. I'm going to click on Math 0481 right here. You can see there is
a list of homework assignments here to choose. Right here is the SHOWING CATEGORY button.
You can look at all of your assignments, you can look at homework assignments only, you
can pull up a menue of quizes, tests, and other assignments. For this course, the only
thing you are going to find on here is homework and quizzes. You've got some messages here.
We aren't going to be using the discussion board feature of ConnectMath, because we will
be using the dicussion feature in our Blackboard. Let's see what else is available, I like this
one. E-BOOK. I'm going to make that screen a little bigger. And right here you can see
E-Book, you're going to have your entire textbook onloine. Next, I want to show you what is
available under the RESOURCES tab. We have some things here to help you study. Let's
take a look at what's under VIDEOS quickly. We can check out any chapter we like. Let's
try Chapter 2. This lady in orange is Sherri Messersmith (author of your textbook) and
when she explains the problems on her videos, I'm sure she's going to explain it pretty
much along the same lines as she did in her book. Let's take a look at some practice problems
under the PRACTICE tab. I think I want to start by looking at Chapter 5 where you will
be solving systems of linear equations. You can see there is a tab for every section of
the chapter. We're going to go into section 5.1. [reading the screen] "This practice assignment
will not affect your grade. There is no credit for this assignment. You can practice the
assignment as many times as you want. Start the assiognment now". Let's click on that.
There you go. This is what the screen's going to look like as you are doing the homework
and quiz questions. Now we havn't learned yet how to do this but I want to show you
the different ways questions will be presented to you. This is a multiple choice question.
Either it IS a solution, or it IS NOT a solution. Let's just grab one. I said it's NOT. CHeck
the answer right here. And the answer was....wrong! I didn't know what I did wrong, so right here
it says try another. We can try another one just like. Under GUIDED SOLUTION, it will
show us how to solve the problem. They're not going to do it for us, they're going make
us do it but they're going to walk us through the steps so we can think it through. SHOW
AN EXAMPLE, here is where you're going to get the whole explanation of how to do it.
Here they're actually going to do it for you. You can ASK MY INSTRUCTOR. If you click on
that you can send me an email. Type your question in there and it's already going to tell me
which problem you were working on. Or you can link to the textook right here. You want
to find out how to solve that problem? Here it is. The part of the text book that talks
about it, In case the other explanation isn't working for you, you can check it out in your
textbook. Number 7 looks like we're going to do some graphing. Y equals the opposite
of x. How an I going to do that? I'll grab this button. Here to.... here. Try again..
see I can only hit that button a certain number of times and then it kind of get's angry with
me. There we go! y = -x. Now let's try this one. It's not saying I graphed it right, it's
just saying that's the one I picked. So, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, is where
I need to be. And you'll learn how to figure that out later, but let's just say we know..
there we go! OK, I admit it. I dragged that one out a little bit. But that's because I
wanted to show you that graphing on ConnectMath can be a little tedious! I don't want you
to lose points on your quiz because you didn't take time to do homework on ConnectMath. Let's
go back to an easier problem. I want to show you a different kind of answering situation.
We're here on the PRACTICE screen. I'm going to change to Chapter 2, Section 1. Let's take
a look at the preview assignment. Start the assignment. Ok, they want us to rewrite this
expression using exponents. When I click on the box to put in the answer this menu box
comes up on the side. All different formats and keys that we can use. This is going to
be written as an exponential, so I'm going to choose this box right here. OK. So I'm
going to put the base here which is 5, and the exponent which is 3. Check the answer,
and there you go. Always nice to have some positive reinforcement. OK, now we're going
to try something really fancy. We have a fraction being raised to an exponent. Let's check this
out. The first thing we need to remember is that we want the whole fraction to be raised
to the power so you need to put parentheses on it. I'm going to click on the box here.
And I notice on the menue on the side there is no parenthesis, so where in the world am
I going to parentheses? What I'm going to do is click on the text box, and once I'm
in the text box I'm going to use my keyboard to type shift and a parenthis there. The next
thing I need is the fraction, so I click on the fraction box. The numerator is 8, denominator
is a 9. The next thing I need to do is get out of the fraction, and I need another text
box to close my parentheses I will use the keyboard, the shift key and the close parenthsis.
And the next thing I need is the exponent box. I think we have 7 of these, so I'll put
a 7 in the exponent box. And...cross your fingers, check the answer, and yes we made
it. Thanks for watching! I hope you found some ways to make ConnectMath.com work for
you!
