One of the biggest problems in the field of gifted education
is the mythology that seems to persist
in spite of the fact that there are no facts to back it up.
Let me give you just a couple
of examples of the myths.
One of those myths is that gifted kids will make it on their own, so don’t worry about them.
Well perhaps if you have
them too, that a lot of them are lost when we have that kind of a
philosophy that drives what we do in schools.
The fact is that every child goes to school to learn
and if you aren’t learning things on a daily basis, you're missing the point, and
children aren’t learning
perseverance, study skills all of the things that are so important
for their later success. Another
myth that is so eprvasive
is the myth that
gifted children come from middle and upper income families.
Well, they do but they also come from
low income families
and they also come from all
types of diverse backgrounds and it is incredibly
important for us to be looking for children
in all of those places because if we don't believe we will find them, we certainly won’t.
Perhaps what I would like most to say
as you read and begin to learn,
is to look for the facts
and make sure
that you dispel the myths, don’t believe those just because other educators do.
