Hello, and welcome back to another episode of osu!academy!
So now that you have learnt how to play standard
its time to challenge yourself with another gamemode.
Today we'll continue with the play mode called "osu!mania".
What is osu!mania you ask?
It is based off other popular rhythm games that has similar playstyle.
The main objective of the game is to hit notes in multiple columns
according to the rhythm of music.
This play mode is categorised in keys -
4,5,6,7 and 8K
The K represents how much keys you will have available to press.
For example - 7K means you have to rely on 7 columns of notes with 7 keys,
which will you have to press according to the rhythm.
The more keys there are, the harder it gets.
By now I'm sure you think this gamemode will be pretty hard to play.
It will get easier with practice.
First off we'll explain the controls and different key layouts.
As there are different key modes, there are different layouts,
which will help you play the specified keymode more comfortably.
These layouts are designed to make sure the player can press all the keys simultaneously,
without the keyboard locking up.
Custom layouts can be set but the default ones are recommended.
If you played any similar rhythm games,
you'll most likely know which key layout you'll be using
but if you haven't played any of them,
feel free to experiment until you find which one you are most comfortable to play with.
osu!Mania Gameplay So now that you know how the controls work
Let's get a basic idea on how to play osu!mania.
Go to the song select screen and at the bottom you'll see a button that says "Mode"
Click it and select "osu!mania" on the list.
Now all standard difficulties will be autoconverted to osu!mania notecharts.
Now let me explain how difficulties work.
The harder the difficulty is, the higher the keycount will be.
For example an Easy difficulty will be 4K and the Insane difficulty will be 7K.
Though if you prefer playing a certain keymode,
you can force it by selecting a playmod from the Mods Menu.
If you feel like playing 4K on any difficulty,
just select the 4K mod and it will automatically convert all difficulties to 4K!
In the example we are showing here is a Hard difficulty on 4,5 and 6K
to give you an idea how one difficulty will look in each key mode.
As the keymode has more keys,
the patterns will get harder and will require to press more keys simutaniously!
While forcing a Key mode can make things easier
be sure to remember that just because it is in 4K
doesn't mean its going to be easy!
You can also speed up or slow down the speed of the notes
by pressing F3 and F4 or Ctrl +/-.
This will make reading easier or harder
depending on your personal preference
so feel free to play around with that setting.
On a side note
you can also flip the entire playfield upside down in the options menu.
That will turn the notes around and make them appear from down to up!
If you have watched the previous episode,
you will know where to find it.
If not, well... why haven't you?
Now lets move on by explaining how to play osu!mania.
As notes are falling down,
you will have to hit them
when they reach the bottom
but that doesn't mean you just have to guess when they have fallen.
Remember:
You have to hit them according to the rhythm of the music!
There are two types of notes:
a single note
and a long note.
In some cases,
you'll need to hit notes
while holding a long note or alternate between multiple long notes!
Depending on the difficulty,
these combinations can be very hard to follow
but with practice,
your fingers will learn how to handle harder patterns.
Starting off with 4K may be the best choice for most new players
as it requires less keys to press.
In order to get used to a keymode,
your fingers need to know which key to press for which column at all times.
But its your choice!
You can start from 7K if you want to!
Nowadays osu!mania can have its own ranked beatmaps
so you can play difficulties created by other players
instead of autoconverted ones.
But be warned!
Some of them can become very hard
so be ready for a new challenge!
Well that is all for from us here at the academy!

We hope to see you real soon!
