It was the great idea, the great ideal after the war.
I was born after the war, so I'm from the first generation
that has never known war or the threat of war.
I'm very aware of how privileged I am, living in a time like this.
It was, above all, the European idea that was responsible for this,
that was behind this lasting peace.
That always spurs me on.
When working to alleviate the eurozone crisis,
we are fighting the recession, we are fighting to save the currency,
but we are also fighting, above all, for the European cause.
Because the fate of the euro and the European Union are linked in such a way
that if one is lost, in this case the euro, we'll lose the other one.
And if we lose the European Union,
we will, in fact, lose this possibility of peace,
this achievement of decades of peace.
So the motivation is deeply rooted.
It's not only inspired by the economy and money,
it is inspired by an ideal, the ideal of peace and reconciliation.
