Are you getting a lot of heat from family members who think you should provide your
product or service for free just because they're family?
I'm Denise O'Berry and you're watching the "Little Big Show."
Your place for bite sized tips that can have a big impact on your bottom line.
Why do family members put the ones they love in the position of expecting free work and
how do you deal with this dilemma? Perhaps your family members don't take your
business seriously and frankly, sometimes family members just don't think about the
fact that it costs you time and money to be in business.
The best thing you can do in this type of situation is make sure that they understand
you won't be in business for very long if you provide everything for free.
Sit down with your family members and have a discussion.
Explain that your business is your livelihood and ask for their help and support, and just
because it's not the greatest idea to work for free, you can still work out some good
deals that will work for both you and them. If you'd like to help out your family members,
but you don't want to go broke in the process, here's four ideas that you might want to consider.
#1: Offer a discount or a percentage off for the items that they want to buy.
#2: Agree to do their work when your work for paying clients has all been completed.
#3: Give gift certificates that can be redeemed for your products or services.
And #4: Barter with them. Is there something they can do for you that
will make your life a little bit easier? Have you ever been in a sticky situation with
a family member? How did you handle it?
I would love for you to share your thoughts in the comments below.
