To conduct a literature search, start by framing
a research question:
Highlight the two or three main concepts, in this case the problem:
operating rooms and the intervention: a checklist.
Boolean logic uses the and connector to retrieve results
with both terms present. For example
checklist AND operating rooms. Let's begin a search in PubMed.
A biomedical article database with More than 22 million citations,
PubMed is available via the NYU link.
From the main screen and to the initial search terms
checklist AND operating rooms. From the many search results in this example
we will filter to narrow results to articles published in the last five
years.
Browse begin to view citations. Notice the words checklist and operating rooms
appear somewhere in each.
As you view results you may harvest added synonyms for one or more
up the search terms. In this citation we also see the MeSH term
"surgical procedures operative". In another result
noticed the MeSH term "perioperative care". Use the
OR connector to broaden the search strategy and retrieve citations with
any other requested terms. Back in PubMed
this is what our expanded search looks like. Filters on the left menu can narrow
search results by Article types,
publication date, languages and more. For full text options at NYU,
