I'm Zack McClennon, I've been vice president of the UniSA Hockey Club
for about seven months now and I'm enjoying it very much.
We, like most amateur sporting clubs, cater for a wide range of skill
levels, so if you've never picked up a stick before it doesn't matter.
We have the lower grade teams that you can easily fit into and
learn as you go and we also have the higher teams that cater to people who've been playing
a bit longer or are a bit more gifted with the stick skills and the ball skills.
We have students from all different backgrounds. We have quite afew international students
playing for us at the moment. From India, Pakistan, Malaysia.
And we have a Canadian student actually, on exchange, who's played for
the club for the past six months and he'd been playing ice hockey during his time in Canada
and has adapted quite well, even though there are many differences between the two games.
We have a relatively even amount of guys and girls in the club.
We've got three girls teams, two guys teams and we also
draw people from all the different campuses, so Mawson Lakes,
Magill, City West and City East and so we've got the
range of different academic disciplines in our club as well and I think that adds nicely to the mix.
I studied Physiotherapy. So, I graduated in 2003.
So, I'm working as a Physio in the public health sector.
So, I work in a lot of health promotion with people recovering from injury and
like developing their own fitness, so this is a great way for me to be a good role model
and help, you know, apply some of that to our team as well if we have any injuries on the sideline.
With our club, ultimately, it comes down to people having fun, so while we do
play competetively, we play hard, we play to win, it's all about having fun when we go out there
I guess there's a big social aspect. So, you've got the pub crawls and pub nights.
Do you remember it?
A lot of stuff came out on the pub crawl.
Do you want to elaborate?
I'm sure there are some pretty interesting pictures on Facebook you can have a look at.
We have a pub crawl early on in the year as well as cocktail nights,
quiz nights, just end of year functions, barbeques with teams whenever possible.
I think it's good that we can do that at the club and I think it's something that
people at university should definitely think about if they want to get more social things
out of their studies.
