>> SAVARY: I'm Savary. I'm the teacher of Cambodian culture.
>> CHIEU: So, if the Cambodian Cultural Dance Troupe can stand up. We would like to say
thanks.
>> LADY: Not only has it been welcoming to the dance troupe and the language school,
but it is inviting for granddaughter, her family. People come here and use the library
feel welcomed. The staff is always very friendly.
>> CHIEU: ...Vietnamese class volunteers. One of the volunteers is here.
>> Both of them!
[audience claps]
>> PAUL: Hi, I'm Paul. I'm a volunteer at Tully Road Branch Library, San Jose. What
I do is, I help the immigration training classes, which is primarily immigrants of Vietnamese
background, Asian, and we have a lot of fun in the class because they enjoy learning about
America.
>> CHIEU: The next one is the citizenship classes. We do have two classes. One is on
Wednesdays from 6:00 to 8:00. The other one is Saturdays from 1:00 to 3:00. If you are
here, please stand up so everybody can recognize you. Paul, I know you are here.
[audience claps]
>> CHIEU: Anybody else?
[audience claps]
>> PAUL: You know, my daughter's been coming to the library ever since - it'll be three
years. She's part Vietnamese and she gets her Vietnamese language training here so she
doesn't forget that because it's not taught in public school. And they're also giving
her some mathematics. It's a very good social environment.
>> CANDICE: The computer class in Vietnamese is one of our popular programs, ongoing programs.
Without these folks we would not have been able to provide that service to the community,
and so we really do appreciate all of their efforts.
>> CHIEU: We would like to thank Vu Ngo. He's the lead volunteer for the computer classes.
This is Vu right here.
[audience claps]
>> ANH: I'm Anh Quach, and I'm a volunteer at the library. And I believe that the library is one big family. We all
care for each other, and we care for the library, and I'm pretty sure everyone else loves it,
too.
>> CHIEU: We would like to say thanks to teensReach officers. The officers, can you stand up so
everyone can see you?
>> JENNY: Hi, I'm Jenny Huynh. I'm a junior from Yerba Buena High School, and I'm the
teensReach president. I know it's kind of, like, typical to say that you like everything,
but to be honest, I really like everything about the library and the staff and the kids
that I get to help and all the fun teens that I get to work with.
>> DANNY: My name is Danny Dinh, and for year 2009-2010, I was teensReach Tully's vice president.
And what I particularly like about the library is that it has instilled these values and
given me the opportunity to meet other teens and socialize and also actually exert my leadership
skills. I just really like my time here, and when I go off to college next year, I'm gonna
miss you guys so much.
>> KATHY: Hi, my name is Kathy Pham. I'm the teensReach treasurer, and I've been here since
my freshman year. I've always liked being at the library because it's a place of knowledge.
You get to learn more about books -- well, you're reading books and you get to learn
about subjects that interest you as well as meeting other people at the library. It's
a lot of fun because being part of teensReach has really changed my outlook on things. Instead
of just being involved at school, I get to meet people who are from Silver Creek, YB,
even Independence, who volunteer as well. And we do a lot of events for the children
and teens. It's a way of being social as well as giving back to the community.
>> LISA: Hi, I'm Lisa. I'm the vice president of teensReach. I first joined teensReach because
this is my local library. I had no idea what was in store, but I really love it here because
you don't -- you meet new people, but you also get to see, you know, all the children
and then once you take part into this teensReach thing, it's like, you never imagined that
this could happen, you know. And you never -- you hear people say that this happens in
your library, but you don't really know how much fun it is and how hard the librarians
work, so it's something you shouldn't miss out. So I really love it here.
>> CHIEU: So, we have four candidates, and I would like the candidates to stand up. Van
Nguyen, if you're here, please stand up. Diana Nguyen, if you're here, please stand up. We
have Lawrence Vo. We have Christine Phan.
So, the winner is... Lawrence Vo.
>> JACKSON: My name is Jackson.
>> LAWRENCE: I'm Lawrence, your new VP. And we like -- what we like about the library
is how there's always something -- a different event every week that can not only teach the
little kids but us, arts and crafts.
>> JACKSON: You can enjoy it, too, with the kids. Have fun.
>> LAWRENCE: Yeah, it's a great way to get hours.
>> JACKSON: Get hours and enjoy time with little kids.
>> LAWRENCE: Yeah. It looks great on our college resume, too.
>> CHIEU: Last but not least, the Volunteer of the Year. We do have the nominees: Calvin
Nguyen, Vu Ngo, Jenny Huynh, Lisa Le, Danny Dinh, Kathy Pham, Wendy Nguyen.
[audience claps]
>> CHIEU: Do you see that? She also voted by entire library system -- San Jose Public
Library Volunteer of the Year! Congratulations, Lisa!
>> JOAN: I'm Joan Young, the volunteer coordinator, and each year, the winner of the Volunteer
of the Year for the system has their name put on this plaque, which is a perpetual plaque.
So we have Volunteer of the Year every year, and this plaque will stay at Tully for the
coming year. And so everybody gets to see your name up there, Lisa. And when I read
your nomination, I was so impressed that somebody so young had accomplished so much, and I hope
you stick around for many more years at the library.
>> JANE: Congratulations! We're so grateful to you.
>> KATHY: Well, the library is mostly like the center point of the community. It's where
people go when they need to learn something about a subject. You check out videos. You
get to participate in fun events, like hula classes, English-learning classes if you're
a new citizen around here and you want to be naturalized, and there's a lot of resources
at the library, too.
>> One, two, three. Want another one?
>> Another one? Sure! Okay.
>> One, two, three.
[laughs]
>> LAWRENCE: This -- the library is
a place where you can get resources for school. I mean, it's pretty fun. Don't you find it
enjoyable?
>> JACKSON: Well, I think it's enjoyable, but then, the good thing is that the kids
are enjoying their time here.
>> LAWRENCE: Yeah.
>> JACKSON: For like, they will mostly come to join the events probably because they're
>> JACKSON: Free time. And your parents, like, want them to be safe and have fun at the same
time. So I guess --
>> LAWRENCE: It's a break for the parents, too.
>> JACKSON: They enjoy. We learn new stuff.
>> LAWRENCE: Yeah, we can read to them -- I mean, that's -- reading is a life skill.
