Enrolling an iOS device in Stanford Mobile Device Management service.
There are a few things to note before enrolling.
If you currently have Stanford email and calendar setup on your device,
please remove that prior to beginning enrollment. This can be done in
Settings - Mail, Contacts, Calendars. If you need a device
setup without email (for example, a shared or
on-call device) please enroll normally, then submit a HelpSU request
to be added to the No Email group in AirWatch
If you were enrolled in the prior version of Stanford's
MDM tool, specific instructions for upgrading to the new
Stanford MDM service,
powered by AirWatch will be sent to you. Do not enroll in the new Stanford AirWatch MDM at this time.
If you receive an error from Safari that says
"too many redirects" please go to
Settings - Safari - Clear cookies and data, then restart your device
and try again. This often occurs on new devices
that have been restored from a backup of an older device.
Enrollment in MDM
usually takes less than five minutes if you do experience problems during enrollment
please submit a HelpSU request by calling 5-HELP
or going to helpsu.stanford.edu
We'll be happy to assist you. Begin your enrollment by going to Safari.
Type in mdm.stanford.edu.
Log into WebAuth normally.
Scroll down to tap "Register this device."
Tap learn more to understand what MDM will change on your
iOS device. If your device already has a Stanford email and calendar configured
go to the device's Settings - Mail, contacts, calendar and delete your Stanford
account. MDM will add this account for you.
No data will be lost. Enrollment begins with installing
the AirWatch agent from the App Store. An iTunes account is required.
After installing the app, open it, and enter your
Stanford address at the prompt. Tap
Begin Enrollment. You're taken directly to the AirWatch
app in the App Store. It will either say free
or have a cloud if you've previously downloaded the AirWatch agent to another
device.
Tap
open.
Enter your Stanford email address.
Select Device Ownership: Corporate - Dedicated is a
university provided device.
Corporate - Shared are items like an on call phone.
Employee Owned is a
personally-owned device, like mine.
Tap next. The Terms of Use
detail what Stanford will and will not do with your data.
Stanford University respects your privacy and cannot access your
application data,
your call history, your voicemail, or your SMS messages.
We cannot and do not collect your personal data.
Here's what we do collect and why. It gives
a list of all the things MDM does.
It also lists what is stored for each device.
You can always see this information at mdm.stanford.edu
Tap Accept.
We've successfully authenticated. Next, tap continue.
We're now going to see some screens
that are unique to iOS. These were provided by Apple.
Tap Install, Install Now,
then if you have a passcode it will prompt you for that passcode.
finally it will ask you to Install again.
Tap Install, then tap Done.
Success! We have successfully completed the enrollment process.
Next,
you will be prompted to enter your Stanford email and calendar
password and set a passcode, if you do not previously have one set.
Your passcode is required to be at least
four digits long.
The Stanford App Catalog also appears.
From there you can access several free
apps that are available to all Stanford affiliates. This includes things
like the Box app, the Google Authenticator for two-step authentication.
and a link to StanfordWho
If you tap Mail,
you'll be prompted for your Stanford email and password.
That concludes our tour of
the MDM enrollment process.
One final note: many people stop enrollment when they see this message
on the 3rd Apple installation screen. The message says:
The administrator may collect personal data, add/remove accounts and restrictions,
list, install, and manage apps, and remotely erase data on your iPhone.
What this means is when we say the administrator may collect personal data
specifically we associate your name with this device
for your record at mdm.stanford.edu You can see
all of the data that we collect there. "Add and remove accounts" -
we add your Stanford email and calendar account to your device.
This will only be removed at your request at the time you choose to unenroll
your device,
or if the device is lost or stolen and you request a device wipe.
"and restrictions" - we enforce restrictions
such as requiring a four-digit passcode or requiring
auto-lock and passcode lock after five minutes.
"List, install, and manage apps" - we offer free apps in the Stanford
App Catalog, which you have the option to install. The Stanford App Catalog is also
installed automatically when you enroll.
Some departments also provide paid apps at no cost to the user.
If you unenroll from MDM these apps will be automatically removed.
"Remotely erase data on your phone" -
In the event that you unenroll from Stanford MDM service
your MDM profiles, including Stanford email and calendar account will be
automatically erased from your phone.
Additionally, once you are enrolled in MDM,
you can go to mdm.stanford.edu
and send the command to remotely erase data on your device
in the event that is ever lost or stolen. This would never be done by a Stanford
administrator without your acknowledgement and permission.
Thank you for watching the
Stanford MDM enrollment preview.
