Was your father in an arranger also? Yes he was.
Where did he learn how to arrange? Nosotros,
the Madera family was originally from Mayagüez but my grandfather liked
the ocean so much they went to Guayama.
And...
My uncles...everybody in the family is a musician.
My aunt Mencia whose is Margo's
the dance team of Augie and Margo........ Margo's mother was a classically trained
pianist and taught piano.
Oscar Madera played violin and clarinet. Frank Madera
played saxophone, led his own band
Simon Madera played base and played with Cugat and those people. And my dad obviously played,
wrote for Daniel Santos, wrote for Vitín Avilés, wrote for Tito Rodriguez,
wrote for Machito. I'd have to
bring a list of stuff. And was responsible for the first hits
of Machito's band. Way back in 1939.
So, he learned
theory but as far as actually the arranging aspect of theory,
how did that come about? I don't know, I wasn't there..... but..
I'm going to assume that his father Simon taught him.
My grandfather was a violinist..
they probably learned all that at home, and my dad...
as was the want years ago, when you were going to play saxophone
you didn't start on the saxophone, you started on the clarinet. Which was a much harder instrument to
play than the saxophone. The you moved to saxophone and stuff.
