"WE'LL BE BACK"
GUNS OF WAR (The Republic of Uzhitze)
Starring:
MARKO TODOROVIC as Commander-in-chief Tito
Written by:
Photography:
Music:
The movie is realized with help and participation of Yugoslav Army
Directed by:
Gentlemen, I begin with implementation of "Decision 25".
We are to invade Yugoslavia!
Finally we will revenge our dead soldiers from the WWI.
And our nation is predisposed by its culture and civilization
to bring a new order to Europe!
Tomorrow, Belgrade will be razed by bombs
and our forces will cross the Yugoslav border.
Its fields will feed our troops,
and raw materials - - our industry.
A providence told me what to to.
To the Commander in Chief, Adolf Hitler:
The bombing of Belgrade and invasion of our forces
brought Yugoslav royal army to debacle.
No one leads it now.
Troops are handing over, or flying away unclothing the uniforms.
Military commanders and their families are escaping to Greece.
Most of them are ready for capitulation.
Reported: General Field Marshal List.
Proceed! Follow them!
Don't shoot!
Look at them running!
- Misha! Will he shoot? - Just run! Don't ask now!
You're so unlucky to be an object of the chase.
Do you have an idea when you will get to Uzhitze afoot?
I certainly would.
- Misha, where's your cap? - I don't even know where my head is.
I'd like it shot me, rather than to made fools of us in front of camera.
Goebbels is good in his propaganda job.
If only they shot!
Calm down.
We'll have a chance for revenge.
Bro, let everyone of us kill 10 Krauts!
Deal, but that's not enough for the shame we had. Let it be 20.
Halt! Stop!
Where are the Germans?
Am I supposed to know it better than you?
Civilians, get out of the military truck!
They are spies.
What are you waiting for? Get out!
Let me explain...
What are you doing in a military truck?
We've found it abandoned on the road.
Which road? Where are you coming from?
From Belgrade.
Who is there?
Germans.
I saw our soldiers wandering by the road.
These guys served in the 4th regiment.
- Their officers surrendered. - So what?
Why haven't you gathered the troops, why don't you fight?
Nobody asks you!
Take off your clothes.
You two, too!
Well, mayor, what's your decision?
As the mayor, I can tell you only this:
it is illegal to intervene in military business.
So you won't defend the town?
The Germans are approaching.
The only thing we can do is a white flag.
Shame on you!
Bora!
- When you arrived? - Moments ago.
- Eeleeyah! - Hi, Bora.
You've been released?
A bomb hit the prison, so I just walked away.
People down there are waiting for weapons, they need it immediately.
Disapproved! It's a violation of law! I am still an authority here!
You were, until you suggested the flag of truce.
Get out of here by yourself, or we're gonna do it!
If you don't have enough weapons, deplete the factory.
Deal out all and hide the rest.
Nada! I hardly recognized you.
But I recognized you instantly.
When I saw you 5 years ago, you were still a student.
Now she is a history teacher.
Not any more. I've been fired.
Teacher, what's on? We are volunteers but there's no one to sign us in.
You taught us that the youth should lead in our fight.
Now they say we are the children requiring us to go home.
Follow me.
Hello, Pozhega!
Come in, please!
Germans...
Close the store, master Pero! Troubles in sight! Hide yourself!
Really? Oh, come on!
When the troubles come, you hide your own grandpa!
It's closed. Wrong time.
I just want to ask you something.
Shoot.
Is all of this bread yours?
Yes. So what?
Why don't you eat it then?
Oh, you brat!
Stay there. Don't be afraid.
Whose boy are you?
My granny's, whose else?
Granny's? Here...
Miss, which side are the town's headquarters located at?
Not at ours!
They fled!
And they armed ones?
These are the civilians that didn't flee.
Thanks!
- Captain, you wanted to see me. - How much people do you have?
120... 150... Some are still arriving.
It's enough. I am going with you, too.
I was afraid I won't shoot a single grenade in this war.
- Get the battery ready! - Sir, yes, ser!
Bora!
Here are the bombs. Most of people don't know how to use them.
You just distribute them.
Slavko, eyes-of-mine, apportion the bombs.
Go!
Misha! My son, take care of yourself.
What's the problem, pa'? Where will we situate ourselves?
You're all gonna die here! What can you do only with guns?
The last time I did this near Madrid.
Stevo was a gunner, too.
Your brother was the best gunner in Spain! /reference to Spanish civil war
Can you manage this?
Eeleeyah!
Why do you drag our child with you? Dacha, go home immediately!
I'll stay with you, dad!
OK, son, your place is here. You, go home.
My hands sweat.
Don't worry. Just level it and don't tense it.
There are so much of them ***!
Don't be afraid, Misha.
Battery, with salvo... Fire!
50 meters closer... Fire!
(Belgrade)
- What did you do with them? - We killed some of them.
Others have been sent to camps.
But nothing changed.
These are all helpers, supporters, agents.
They conceal weapons and have secret meetings.
All of them are against us.
They formed squads everywhere just 2 months after the capitulation.
I am aware of rebellion as soon as I came here.
What do you think about that, gentlemen?
We know that the communists really prepare the rebellion.
Keep in mind that Serbia is under my command now!
- Are these the seized pamphlets? - Yes.
Who is... Tito?
Secretary general of the Yugoslav Communist Party (KPJ)
That is the way his words are spreading through the country.
"Form the prime partisan units in towns and villages."
DEAD TO THE FASCISM, FREEDOM DO THE PEOPLE
"Prepare for the final battle with bloody Nazis."
Concretely, what are the communists' achievements so far?
Frequent sabotages on trains,
in mines and factories.
And now they attack our soldiers.
For every German soldier killed, shoot 50 of those bandits!
Or 100 or 200, if needed.
That's an order, gentlemen.
Comrades, Tito and the Central Committee decided
that conditions for the rebellion against the invaders are fulfilled.
The decision for the beginning of the rebellion is made on 4th July.
We don't recognize the dismembering of Yugoslavia.
We refuse the nationalism and attempts for starting a civil war.
Nazis depopulated thousands of Slovenian families throughout Yugoslavia,
in order to populate the German people instead of them.
SLOVENIANS, YOU ARE NOT ALONE, OUR HOMES ARE YOURS
In order to stop our struggle and the idea od freedom,
the invaders perform a bloody terror over the country.
Nevertheless, we perform sabotages, diversions
and attacks on their forces.
The Party's influence on common people increases quickly,
so our actions can grow to a nationwide war on the invader,
regardless of its supremacy in number and military equipment.
Militant groups which are already formed, immediately
are to start with the actions by the roads, trains, factories and mines.
And to start to fight against the enemy's troops.
The aim: extruding the enemy out of the country.
Operational field: the whole Yugoslavia.
We will perform the partisan style of campaign. Guerilla.
We invite all patriots, regardless of political beliefs,
nationality or religion, and all oppositional civil parties...
Why them?
Above all, this is a libaration war against the invaders.
Secondly, people don't want the old regime to return.
Extruding the invaders won't solve all the problems we had:
exploitation and all the other social injustices,
poverty and un-education, national inequality.
Those who lived under such conditions will join our struggle.
We have to restore their self-confidence,
that they are able to obtain their rights by themselves.
But they have to believe us that they won't be giving their lives
for the old way of life, but for the life of their own choice.
Dacha, it's your turn. Disassemble and assemble again.
- What's up? - Wait a moment!
We will wait, but the Krauts won't.
- What have you decided? - What do you mean?
When you have a meeting with the officers, it is something important.
It is, don't worry.
Shall we attack that Fascism, for God's sake?
My denary is ready and can't wait any more.
Misha, don't you leave the training. Take your place!
- Hello, Nada. - Hello.
You're already leaving? I thought you'd stay longer.
Our platoon was formed first, and you are always moving...
I have to. You are, too. What do the countrywomen think?
They wonder somebody asks them for their opinion.
- Will you stay for dinner? - I can't.
Here, it's the white cheese you like the most.
You remember you wanted me to send it to you in prison?
(Totally purposeless chit-chat)
The same was happening in 1915.
The Krauts took away all the food, so we starved.
Not a single peace of bread left!
It's the army. Who dares to complain?
You better shut up not to be heard!
What's your name?
They're aiming fine!
Hurry up! To the house!
Get out of there! Hurry!
This is your village? Nice one!
Comrades, come closer, let's have a talk.
The old world is burning!
For those who don't know - - we are the partisans.
We don't recognize the occupation, but we fight for freedom.
And we will, until we extrude the last one enemy soldier!
- Is it a rebellion? - It is.
We rebel against the occupation and injustice, tyranny and pillage.
What about the grain?
Return it to the people.
This municipality served to the invaders,
supplying them with your grain and live stock.
From now on, those who try to restore the municipality's activity,
will be executed.
But we can't function without the municipality.
Elect a group of honorable men to manage both village affairs
and those related to the war, which are the most important.
So much Germans were killed, what's gonna happen when more Germans come?
We will be here to protect you!
You to protect us! You will be outnumbered by them...
You're right. Then send your sons to join us so we'll be more numerous!
True. We kicked their *** already, in the First war.
We know the Germans will be terorizing people because of our fight,
but they'll do it anyway, regardless of our fight.
Shall we sit, or shall we fight?
We shall fight!
Dad, I'm going with them!
With them? Don't rush so much, we don't know who they are.
Welcome, Costa!
- We haven't been captured all? - No.
Enough people for what is to happen.
Major Costa Baratz. Reports on your command.
Approach, major.
Your father was one of my commanders. Great soldier and patriot.
I believe you're your father's real son!
Colonel, I was shocked by the April disaster.
I am ready for anything in order to extrude the enemy.
I am happy I have such an officer.
This is Dragi Simich, my advisor.
Voya, pour us a drink.
- You had a nice trip? - Yes, with no problems.
Cheers.
You know that our government nominated me for the commander-in-chief here.
Yugoslav war regulations prescribe...
that all citizens and soldiers must obey my command, with no objections.
Definitely.
I was told you are to perform a seminar about the aims of our struggle.
Personally, I'd like to know only when we will start to fight against Germans.
It's not the time and the opportunity for that. We are not ready yet.
- But, colonel... - Voya, pour us one more.
Gentlemen!
I appreciate you came upon my call.
You came because you want to fight for the freedom.
Good. But be aware that a lot of people think of freedom as of
a theoretical, almost philosophical category.
It's not to be speculated with!
Firstly, our country failed because it wasn't good.
Why wasn't it good?
Because of parliamentarism and democracy which were in progress
within our classical monarchy. Those gave opportunity to various ideologies
to weaken our state and to bring it to downfall.
I said - various ideologies. But I stress the most dangerous one:
the communist ideology!
At the moment, it is more dangerous than the occupier himself.
Secondly - what forces we lean on in order to correct the situation?
We lean on our glorious Chetnik organization.
Through history, it has been a worthy bastion of both freedom and monarchy.
According to this, instead of speculating with theoretical freedom,
we will fight for our regime and country resolutely and concretely!
I made the program-in-principle of our movement's struggle.
It is approved by our government in London.
It's on you to supplement and implement the program,
keeping in mind that it is the program of anti-communist struggle above all!
You realize the urgency of the situation...
because the enemy is very efficient, both socially and politically.
It has already started to destroy the holy traditions of our reality.
It fights against the private property
and all the rights that certain classes inherited or acquired by their work.
This rebellion will bring the Chetnik dictatorship to the Monarchy!
Judicature, educational and banking system, industry and commerce,
must transcend under the state's jurisdiction.
And the Chetniks will rule the state!
The press will have to support the Chetniks' objectives.
The freedom of speech is not advisable until we are ready for democracy.
Precisely, the freedom of speech exists only within the Chetniks' ideology.
We must form the Great Yugoslavia, with ethnically clean Great Serbia in it.
That means that the territory should be clean of all non-Serbs.
(a traditional Chetnik song: "We will kill, we will slaughter Them who are not with us")
Mr.Simich, I need to ask again: what has been decided?
Nothing. It's not the time yet.
Help yourself! You haven't eaten at all.
(Yugoslav King Peter in exile in London)
(Chetniks' roll call for recruitment)
This is our army!
Partisans are, too.
We recognize this. We served in it.
There is only one army.
Long life to the King!
Is there anyone haven't been roll called?
Me! Corporal Jovanovich Radovan, born in 1921, artillery man.
What's that on your cap?
Last week I joined the partisans.
You traitor! You sworn to the King! You'll go to the Court Martial!
For the record: Jovanovich Radovan.
Captain, let me explain... He is my son.
He made mistake, but it was the necessity of the situation.
I don't wanna hear a word! This is a betrayal.
Go on.
I participated in all of those wars you have mentioned.
My son and I are ready to give our lives for our country.
All right, I uderstand, he made a mistake.
He came to get married, but he won't be back to partisans, I promise.
- Why to get married now? - His wife is pregnant.
Serbian brothers, honorable wedding guests.
Toast to the newly-weds, and to our heroic host, old Gavrilo.
Brothers, the hard times won't last for a long time.
The King and the Government,
together with you, feel the horror of the slavery.
The only thing they think is how to prevail the enemy.
We need to get prepared and armed, but we also need to be brave.
We need to know who and what we are!
Do we know that?
Mayor, you have been dispelled.
Then you didn't say a word, but now you drink wine in peace.
Father, you should raise your voice against the partisans...
Mayor!... People!...
Major, the partisans are in the village!
They must have heard for your mobilization... They are well armed!
Maybe because of me. Somebody has told them...
We don't want to derange the party. We need to speak to major.
- We have already met. - I remember. In April.
I wanted to talk to you.
- Congratulations! - Thank you.
I have been mobilized today.
How? You are with us.
I explained them, but they said I am under oath.
They're gonna fight with roasted pigs and strong drinks.
Radovan, come here.
You stupid peasant. Don't you see you've been cheated?
You are my friend and I like you, that's why I am talking to you.
Doesn't matter which side we are in, we will all fight.
Did we shoot a single bullet before we came to Uzhitze?
- No. - Do you know why not?
Start thinking.
Because those who ruled the state minded their own business.
Now they are doing the same. And you are an ox who tow their carriage.
I prefer to be with you...
My poor Radovan...
Didn't we want to wash the shame, by killing 10 Krauts each?
20.
How much have you killed?
I asked something.
What's your duty?
I am the member of the Headquarters for Serbia. People Liberation Army.
You are authorized to call us on associated attack to that town.
Why that town?
They don't expect us. They think we are far from there.
The garrison in the town is strong. But together, we can destroy it.
We will capture hundreds of guns and medical material.
Generally, I am for the fight against Germans.
I know. That's why I called you.
But I have to consult my command.
This is an extraordinary situation. Can't you decide by yourself?
Regular army doesn't operate on its own. I have to consult the command.
Maybe some other time.
Attention!
This is a special announcement from the Reich Headquarters.
Today, on 19th September, victorious German forces
occupied the capitol of Ukraine, Kiev.
Bro, where are you going to?
Oh, I travel, as you do.
- Bon appetite. - Thanks. - Connect me with Uzhitze.
Hello, Uzhitze!
Hello, Mira, this is Misha.
Where is Dacha?
He's here, don't worry.
Listen to me. Go to my father and tell him:
Misha called. He needs the blue book, urgently.
Can you hear me?
Take care of my cap. You can do something in it...
Clucker, cover me!
Los! Out!
Shall we undress them completely?
I'd like to chase the two of them on the road...
You're kidding? We will change them for our captured comrades.
Gather all the weapons and lade on vehicles.
Here's a drink for the heroic win of yours!
Some other time. You better help us.
Misha, listen to the rhyme I wrote:
"Our houses are full of weapons sent by the Germans."
"Hitler sends his soldiers to serve us like targets."
"More work, less write, 'cause with Misha you might fight!"
Comrades, who'd like to carry the arms to our base?
I will.
Come closer with the carriage.
Sava, are you nuts, the uncle is gonna kill you!
You go with me. He can't even know.
Congratulations.
Captain...
You just walked in, huh?
This is a Serbian town. It's not forbidden.
Why didn't you come an hour earlier?
You misled the communists very proficiently.
This action had an unexpected peal in the world.
Our government has been informed that you liberated the town.
Radio London broadcasted it.
Stockholm broadcasted twice, Lisbon once, London repeated.
- Baratz, stay on dinner. - With pleasure.
You've done it great! Everyone talks about our attack.
Let the announcers speak as much as they can. One day it will be useful.
We have no interest of the pure story of our bravery.
The Germans are very vulnerable. We only has to know how to strike them.
- Have you got any weapon? - Nothing.
The partisans took everything. That's how they supply.
Continue as usually. Mobilize, gather, prepare. Have a sit, gentlemen.
From now on, don't do anything without my permission.
Tomorrow will come the representatives from Belgrade.
We will prepare this for them to see.
Captain, I've heard something is going to happen. Will we fight soon?
Huh, peasant, you'd like to thing by your own head?
I sweared to kill 20 Krauts.
Get lost! Who cares what you sweared to!
You better find a woman to calm you down.
Thanks, no need for that.
Look what I'm gonna do to this redhead.
Let his partisans help him stand up!
Stop it! Enough!
Let them fight and exhaust themselves.
Has it worked?
May we see him?
Comrade (friend), have some chees, the villagers gave us some.
No. And I ain't your fiend.
Get lost of my carriage, I don't want it!
Where are you from? You've been sitting here all day long.
From Rogatchitza. My brother carried the weapons for you.
You can't go home. There is a German punitive expedition.
You bore everyone with your complaints.
Haven't you heard her saying we can't go home!
A kind of... expedition...
I'd like to go, too. But we can't.
Stay with us, you will feel better. And you put on these boots.
- Get some job. - What job?
There's a plenty. You can wash the bandages.
Me? I can't even see the blood!
Come with me. We'll find something you can do.
Go, don't be afraid.
Look, I've got the boots, from gendarmes.
Who cares for that, the uncle's gonna kill you when we come home.
Me alone among all these men?
Zhivco won't marry me when he hears.
Why are you so quiet, don't you see I am unclothed?
I like to watch you.
I like you from the very first day I saw you.
You fascinated me.
I simply can't find another word for what I feel.
In battle, your hair flaunt, seems like a flag to me.
What? Hope I haven't insulted you?
You think I enjoy your words?
Commander, I'm a soldier. I expect to be accepted as a soldier.
Out of 150 soldiers only you are fascinated by me.
You should watch your grade.
Is all of this because of Bora?
There are more important things to discuss.
- So it is clear? - More than clear.
Dismissed!
- Hi. - How do you do.
Give me some water.
Oh, your eyes are burnig, you must have brought good news.
Yes, indeed.
Hello.
You have cut your hear?
It bothered me. Flaunted a lot during the battle.
You are pretty this way, too.
Comrades, you know the whole country respond to our call on rebellion.
Our squads fight intensively throughout Yugoslavia.
We inflict the enemy great losses.
We gain a lot of weapons, we liberated small territories.
People accepts our fight and support us,
whether directly by acceding our troops, or indirectly in background.
Tito moved from Belgrade to the free territory in Valjevo.
Now he is near us, where he receives reports from all over Yugoslavia
and directs our struggle.
Whilst in Belgrade, he had already made a decision of making a larger
free territory in Western Serbia.
From small partisan troops we are developing to an army.
We need strong bases,
with a larger free territory and towns.
Tito ordered establishing of a free territory right here
because of advantageous circumstances.
Comrades, hard efforts and battles are to be done.
We must do our best to conquer Uzhitze.
It will be the center of our movement, not only for Serbia,
but for entire Yugoslavia.
Here is his plan: how to concentrate the forces,
which towns to attack immediately,
with especially elaborated plan for Uzhitze.
Bora, would you like to march into Uzhitze with us?
I don't know, I have to inspect other troops. See you all!
Bora, I have something to tell you.
You go, I'll follow.
What's happened? Problems?
If it's not very important, let's discuss it later.
We have a grand battle tomorrow.
If I get killed, I want to be sure you know I love you.
Teacher, let's go!
That's all I wanted to tell you.
I'm coming!
Wait, Dacha, I've missed you so much!
Don't do it, can't you see I carry a rifle!
That's enough! The town is free, you should resume your schooling.
We liberated just one town, not the whole country.
- We'll be placed in the barracks. - Gather the troops.
Where is my Nicola?
- Misha, haven't you heard? - What?
Gestapo hung him.
But how...
It happened there.
Chief Toza, switch-board is operational.
Did you hear me?
I heard!
Let's see what we have here...
Slavko, eyes-of-mine...
Hi, chief Toza!
How are you doing?
The main axis and spindle has been corrupted.
I pray the turbine is in order.
When do you expect you'll finish?
This night! The citizens will have dinner with lights on!
(minor talk of the operator)
The most important thing now is food supplying.
We have 3,000 refugees beside the citizens.
Report from Pozhega. Same as here.
How do we deal with supplying issues? Any suggestions?
Let's continue.
Workers, peasants, citizens of Uzhitze!
I still haven't transferred all wounded.
I also have wounded Germans.
Provide me with a truck.
Great!
"ALL TO THE FRONT"
I go to quicken the loading.
Good luck!
Hurry up! Quick!
- Hi, ready to go? - Ready, Clucker.
Be careful. The Germans may sabotage the rail at the canyon.
These soldiers must arrive to the front line until dawn.
How do you deal with your assignments in the state of peace?
I deal.
What are you looking at?
What would you like to experience the most?
The revolution.
One night you and Stevo sat on the balcony
while I was sleeping in the next room.
You talked loudly and woke me up.
Then I was thinking a lot.
What is such a revolution, which Bora whish so much to happen?
And what is it like?
It brought happiness to me.
I didn't want to tell you anything.
I thought I should renounce my love while the campaign lasts.
Well, we really acted that way.
Our struggle means the years of renouncing.
And we will do it even more.
I try to imagine a love and a life without renouncing.
Who is in charge for marriages?
I am.
But I don't like to be a priest, neither nor the partisan's one!
In a few days we will come to you.
To marry you?
I haven't seen such a nonsence yet!
Punitive expedition!
Seems we are in some colony, or what!
The enemy has 30 organized military units here.
It is politically united.
General Shredder had talks with general Dankemann.
They consider those are a simple group of bandits.
But our previous actions were unsuccessful.
Our propaganda that Red Army was defeated didn't help.
We must detain setting up of such a powerful army!
Occupied Europe might get an impression
that the resistance is still possible!
And it could have an epidemic effect to others.
Our Fuhrer ordered the following to be transferred here:
342nd division from France, 113th division from Eastern front,
and 125th special regiment from Greece.
We'll have 47th Croat division from Eastern Bosnia
and 12 domestic Nedich's troops.
Altogether, 6 divisions and a regiment.
I guarantee I will attain the order with these troops.
Major, what is it the "Abwer" works on?
It works on the case of Col. Mihailovich
and his "army in the fatherland".
That nationalist is against the partisans.
Which can help our goals.
Excellent!
The Fuhrer gave me reinforcements to attain the order here.
This is Fuhrer's order, quote:
Serbia has to be a terrifying model.
Regarding the security of our troops,
neither women nor children are to be exempted.
During the battles against the communists,
you should push the civilians towards the partisans.
Then they will have to take care of them.
Dear listeners, a mother wrote us a letter.
Her son died.
His friends sent to his mother
his personal things.
The mother said:
Here I have my dear boy's notebook.
On the last page there's a song he liked to sing.
The name of the song is "Good night, mother".
Should I turn it off?
# Good night, mother, good night #
# You had been thinking about me every moment #
# You cared and worried about your boy #
# In the evening you used to sing me a lullaby #
# Good night, mother, good night #
# You carred and worried #
# You used to forgive me #
# You cherished #
# Good night, mother #
# Good night #
What's up, folks!
Move on! There's no more bread!
There's no flour, not even a bit!
You wait here.
No flour!
How many are here with you?
The whole family, six of us.
Find out where to house the refugees and how to feed them.
- House them into schools. - Schools are already loaded!
Then into houses. Gather your students to help the housing.
- It's raining! - Just what we need!
God damn! People from Machva send us a lot of wheat.
It will be here in a few days.
But what for today?
I will send Misha's dozen to help.
Misha, Dacha!... Take two trucks for wheat transport!
Yes, sir!
I don't envy you at all. About 1000 refugees are approaching.
Again?
Here you are. It will help you not to get cold.
Thank you, Luca.
You got to give me two trucks. For the wheat.
Listen to this:
"It's raining with little snow, we have a mission to go."
"Krauts are looking in wonder"... Can you help me continue?
..."but we'll send him to Hell!"
Dacha, go under the awning, you're gonna get cold!
Did you make it?
Now you are a real man!
(counting kids)
Eight.
Here... Pero hid it for you.
Thanks, uncle-Pero!
This is the last piece and it's over!
You've already got one.
Wait a...
So... I see.
Who do you need another piece for?
- Nobody. I'm on my own. - What do you mean? - Nothing.
Why did you want another piece?
One for tomorrow. No one cares of me.
Wait a minute... I know you... You were "granny's son"?
She died a month ago. Now I live solely on my own.
On your own?
Don't tell me... On his own...
You think it is very difficult to live alone?
Don't tell me...
I have been alone all of my life.
I trained myself alone... Started with bakery alone...
And you can't live alone?
I will teach you how to bake bread.
You can be a baker, too! I'll teach you everything!
So... You are not on your own any more. I'll be with you.
- Isn't it a big deal? - It is.
Then, let's start. Listen carefuly...
Mom, the wheat is here!
The trucks are approaching!
Mira, it's wheat!
Why are they so silent?
Why aren't they singing?
Where is Dacha?
Misha, where is Dacha?
Dacha!
Come down, don't trifle with your mother!
Dacha!
Oh...
What have you done with my child?! Damn you!
He headed for the wheat!
Here you are, feed yourselves!
Come.
They toil well!
They are volunteers. Willing to clear what was demolished.
Since the war began, now I see German prisoners for the first time.
Your Serbian is very good.
I worked here 1937 until war began.
As a mining engineer in Zayacha. Is it liberated, too?
Yes.
We liberated everything between the Adriatic See and Belgrade.
They painted them more beautiful then they really are.
This kid doesn't allow Krauts to paint the allies otherwise.
Captain Hudson,
why your government sent you to col. Mihailovich,
when we are those who fight against Germans?
Because he is a legal representative of the Yugoslav government.
But his troops don't fight.
My duty is to check it.
I saw your troops are very good in battles, regarding circumstances.
Is it possible for you to cooperate with Mihailovich?
We keep calling him to cooperate,
but he doesn't think it is time for struggle.
He is waiting for your army to start.
Our army?
Something like that. He'll explain it better.
Wait! I will help you.
Now hammer it. Stronger!
We don't have enough gunpowder, but our people are resourceful.
Now hold the capsule!
Bora, come!
You look like a model!
I have just married two couples.
I am well practiced now. It's yours and Nada's turn...
Unfortunately, it is impossible. Nada is not here.
One of you is always missing.
When you are both here, maybe I'll be away!
(Slovenian) Comrades, call Yelena, here is her brother!
Wait a minute, I will find her.
Sava!
My dear, where have you been?
Where have YOU been?
First you hitched on me, then you disappeared!
And now I'm off your neck.
I'm here in seminary.
What is it?
We all live here together.
I'm on training for paramedic. Hospitals are full of wounded...
God, you are stricken, too. It can be infected. Come with me!
Are you nuts?! Don't you practice on me!
I just knocked in the rail car.
Yelena, you're on the line!
Just a moment!
We have a performance tonight. Please, come.
- I will, if I don't go to a mission. - Please, come!
You'll hear what you've never heard before.
(Slovenian partisan song)
For the end, partisan Yelena sings a song about Tito!
- Does she know to sing? - Shut up!
Why don't you take that iron off your heads?
The commander didn't order so!
- Will "the main thing" start soon? - What's that?
Dancing, that's why we are here.
I pray she won't lapse.
(the most popular partisan song - about Tito and Uzhitze, from which the main movie theme is adapted)
- What? - Once more!
Are you nuts! I'm already all sweat!
Dance now! Move the chairs.
This is our dance.
I was looking at you. I couldn't believe it was you.
- 2nd troop! - 2nd is here!
Now when we were about to dance, we have to move.
All other troops, move now! We'll meet outside.
I am always scared he won't be back.
Who? Sava?!
- Don't be afraid. - He's my only alive relative.
Let's dance.
I don't know how.
Come on, don't worry.
Your performance made you famous.
- Will you go to a culture unit? - I was trained for a paramedic.
I don't know...
I saw the accordionist fools around you.
I thought, maybe he recruited you...
I told you I don't know to dance.
Take it easy.
Just be careful for your fiance Zhivko not to hear...
Are you nuts? It was my uncle who wanted us to be married.
Because of a house that left after my father... I won't be back there.
I will go wherever my troop go.
Your marriage means mutual assistance in good and evil,
responsibility and commitment to fight for the freedom of your people.
Comrade Nada, do you want comrade Bora for your lawful husband?
Here you say 'yes'.
Comrade Bora, do you want to marry comrade Nada?
Here HE says 'yes'.
You see, it lasts less than 10 minutes.
It's purposeless, I haven't seen the fiance for three days.
You dispersed like the children of a crab.
I will need the guard to bring you two here.
Don't worry. Now I know procedure, so I won't make mistake.
Don't worry about the procedure. I just want to gather you.
- May I go upstairs? - Sorry, but no.
- Just to greet the colonel. - No.
Why the Englishman isn't allowed to attend the meeting?
I don't know.
We asked for it.
To see and hear where the misunderstanding is.
Captain, I really don't know.
Let col.Mihailovich and your commander resolve that.
They'll solve nothing, when you keep avoiding the battles.
We liberated a lot of towns, now we have the whole free country.
I know.
And I also see that you are very loyal to that country.
But you are under oath to our King and his glorious army.
- Haven't you rushed a bit? - We'll see if I have.
But I am absolutely sure you do nothing to save
the reputation of that 'glorious' army.
Major, sir!
- How do you do, Radovan? - I have a son now.
You're in a bad mood.
Why did you kill Dacha?
Who killed him?
Not only him. Every day you kill someone.
Perfidiously, from behind.
Now you negotiate with us, pretending we are allies.
I don't understand you, I swear to my new-born child.
You don't?
Beware not to be late when you can understand.
Bora, what's happened?
Nothing, again. Those officers keep lying us.
They need 'reorganization', 'preparation', 'new weapons'...
Tito explained the need for cooperation
between partisans and chetniks (royal forces).
Soldiers themselves want it, too, because they know
the joint forces would be more effective.
The Germans and domestic collaborators advance toward us.
They are preparing a large offensive to the free territory.
Our cooperation proposal consists of 12 articles.
Joint command, joint government, sharing of war loot
respecting 'everything for the struggle' principle.
Then, we are against the forced mobilization, etc.
Mihailovich rejected almost everything.
He said he was not ready, 'it's not the right time',
'he should ask the Government and the King in London'.
Only did he accepted share of war loot
and he wants a portion of weapons produced in our factory.
- WE to give them weapons? - Yes. Tito promised him.
You know, captain, we use to say
'we leaded him over the water, but he is still thirsty'.
Withal, come inside, I'll report to you.
To give our guns... to THEM?
We should all of them...
- I think you overreact. - No.
All of them, except Radovan, he is decent. And a few of them more.
If there were not those "Radovans"...
Are we marching this way today?
Here.
You have to go to a trip.
- Why today? - It's your terrain.
My signature is enough. No need for the stamp.
You should find these comrades.
You have a new uniform!
I was preparing for the parade...
What can we do... It's an order.
These weapons... from the partisan factory?
Captain, that factory still has its legal owner.
But the partisans use it now.
Yes, because they usurped it.
The trouble is, that YOU don't use it. However...
That's why I'm here. Things need to be reversed promptly.
Are these weapons sent to you based on your agreement with Tito?
Yes.
We've been announced to the commander.
What does he think about my plan?
He holds that 'red republic' to be a wound on a health body.
Are you sure your operation can succeed?
We don't have enough forces to conquer the whole territory.
But we can conquer that one town. Please support me.
Naturally. We need to hit them in the head.
There's something else.
After that, our complete potentials need to be used against Germans.
That won't go easy.
But everything will be possible if your attack is successful.
You're in touch with our supporters in Uzhitze.
When we start, you try to make them help us.
Of course. There are our men in the Partisan Council.
Let's go. The colonel is waiting.
Who is against the proposal?
Five votes against.
According to this, these proposals are passing the Council with 23:5 votes:
To the workers in factories and institutions who work for the front
will be increased salaries, regarding the current expensiveness trend.
The funds for this will be provided
by reduction of higher clerical salaries;
We implement the moratorium on debts with usurious conditions.
That is all for today's session.
Just a moment, gentlemen.
As a member of this Council, I'd like to tell you something important.
Oh, not now, we finished!
It's never too late. Gentlemen and comrades,
in the name of Agricultural, Radical and Democratic Party,
I declare the following:
Seems suspicious to me.
We've been deceived!
I am glad that here is comrade Bora,
who persuaded me and my colleagues to join this dishonorable ongoing.
What is he talking about? This is dishonorable?
You don't need to sit here if you think the care for the poor
is dishonorable.
It's not about the poor. It's about the principles.
During the negotiations, Bora clearly said that
the primary goal of the fight was extruding the enemy out of the country.
Constitutional and system issues were to wait to the end of war.
We accepted the negotiations under these conditions.
But the reality, including today's decisions, are totally different:
To Bora and the creators of his politics
it is more important to overthrow our democracy,
than to extrude the enemy.
I guess I deserve to be listened.
I've been listening to you for 20 years.
On your provocation I answer precisely and clearly:
extruding the enemy IS our primary objective.
But to gain it, to get people ready to die for the freedom,
we had to tell them what they can expect in freedom.
They won't fight any more for that 'democracy' of yours,
where millions lived in poverty.
That's why we are overthrowing that system. And we will continue with it.
I devoted all my life for that.
Thanks for the sincerity.
Then, my colleagues and I have only one solution - to resign.
Accepted! Leave the session!
But Bora...
Let them go! Now!
Let them go to Hell!
Their resignation is not accidental.
2,000 chetniks approaching Uzhitze.
They are their men here.
Counselors, get your guns and go to fight!
(these machines from 19th century are still in function in Uzhitze textile factory)
(and this wooden bridge still exists and is open for one-way traffic)
Stand in attention!
Attack begins. I want you to be in Uzhitze 'till evening.
Major, we caught some partisans here in the village.
Move!
Here they are.
Captured here. Worked against us behind our backs.
I don't 'work'. I came to our wounded. This was our interim hospital.
Behave yourself when you talk to the officers!
What does this mean?
- Are you a communist? - I am.
Shoot them.
1st Squad, align there.
Move them down here.
Leastways, free these children and wounded. They aren't guilty.
Only I am a communist. Kill me!
Let the others go!
Get ready!
How dare you!
Aim!
Fire!
You'd like to go to Uzhitze, huh? On our promenade, in movie theatre?
Watch tour pants!
Fire with salvo!
Give me your hand, Pero!
Don't you tell me that!
- You couldn't by yourself... - Who?
- You're old. - Your grandpa' is old.
- You don't need help, huh? - Will you give me a hand!
Slavko, eyes-of-mine, align the bombs here like on stand.
- You see, old man? - I see. Massive work!
Radovan!
Onwards!!!
Workers battalion, attack!
I'll help you. Get up.
- Shoot! - I don't know how!
You know! Shoot!
Luca, move your fire to that road. Don't let them escape.
Fire!
Don't flee, you cowards!
Go back, ***!
Costa, run, they gonna kill us all!
All troops onwards!
Comrade Tito, the chetniks are totally crashed in the battle.
We captured a number of officers and gendarmes.
We confiscated a lot of weapon, with those which we gave them a few days ago.
The people are resentful at chetniks for attacking us.
I call from Pozhega, from the occupied chetniks' headquarters.
From their archives it is obvious that they prepared general attack on us.
A copy of a letter to Capt. Hudson shows
that they go to a civil war intentionally
because they can't accept our politics.
They do just what the occupier wants:
massacre between us.
- Yes...
Commander, sir...
Yes, I hear... Where?...
Near Valjevo...
And Loznica... Yes, I can see...
All right. Fine.
Sir, yes, sir!
Commander, sir, the troops are ready!
Tito told me the Germans broke down our lines near Valjevo and Loznica.
What do we do with chetniks?
Tito received their representatives. They beg us for mercy
and to stop persecuting them. Also, to renew negotiations.
Four German divisions are approaching our free territory.
We need to reorganize our troops in order to stop them.
Send me all commanders.
Why did they put my cauldron here to be hit first?
# (Serbian folk song)#
Let's smoke. Help yourselves.
Yovitsa, you too.
I don't smoke.
Come on!
Yovitsa, listen.
Take your gun.
Come with me.
This is a good shelter. You'll be safe here.
Fire!
***!
Commander, sir! How did they...
Didn't I tell you? You couldn't be hit there.
Luca...
This is not the right time to leave the battlefield!
You see... It hit... me...
I am sorry... I am... leaving you...
I'll be taking care of you.
It's not so serious.
Nada...
Kiss me!
(the young King in London)
Please.
Are you tired?
I've spent nine hours in the saddle to meet with you.
They have a proverb:
when water and fire appear, neighbours' quarrels then stop.
I have a proverb too: the stronger doesn't pray God.
Maybe we together will extinguish the fire you mentioned.
I am here.
Cigarette?
Colonel Mihailovich, colonel Helm...
Be seated, please.
Dad, where are you going? Dad, don't go, come back!
What do you want, yokel? You heard the order not to go out.
Not to see what you do!? And I sent my son with you!
Traitors!
You lie this people, shame on you! Traitors!
Father! Let him go!
Set this all on fire!
Go to the other side.
- You go to meeting? - Yes.
Have you prepared the speech?
It is important region for us.
The demonstrations need to reflect what people think.
Don't worry, everything is ready. But it will be raining again.
No chance for us to come to Clucker to marry us!
What can we do, we don't have enough time.
You and I always have problem with time.
- When will you be back? - Tomorrow evening.
Clucker and I will be waiting for you.
I'll be waiting!
Mothers, sisters and wives, who sent your dearest in the war against enemy,
you stand abashed at all these happenings.
Why are you wearing black clothes? You too. And you?
Why are you all wrapped in black?
Why father shoots his own son, why brother do the same to his brother?
They used to sit together and share the same bread.
They who betrayed our country on 6th April are guilty for this!
Now they force your sons to kill each other.
We address them when we say: Stop this fratricidal war!
We all know how much efforts were placed
to made an agreement with chetniks
in order to direct all Serbian guns to the occupier.
Serbian people know that chetniks never abided by that agreement.
They to whom you gave birth, are still being killed.
Who shuld stop this slaughter?
You who gave them life, you have a right to talk on behalf of life.
For life, you should hold the world in your hands,
you can and you must change the world!
Don't let someone else conduct your lives and your future.
Fight for your future by yourselves.
Bora...
Yes, my darling?
What if one of us get killed?
Then the one who remains will be remembering this morning.
Oh, yes.
I couldn't endure it.
Don't get killed, Bora.
No, I promise you.
It will be a good living after the war.
People will walk the streets freely
and sleep in peace all night long.
Women won't be afraid someone can kill their beloved man
or burn their house.
Our supremacy will soon bring this situation to an end.
We must strengthen the pressure.
Order attacks of 113th and 117th division.
342nd and 704th division, onwards with full force.
The goal is to totally surround the bandits.
Full support of air forces!
Every partisan position must be bombed!
Conclusion: group "North" will strengthen pressure on Kosyerich,
then advance towards Uzhitze.
Group "West" will invade Bajina Bashta and proceed towards Uzhitze.
If the partisan Headquarters with Tito is in Uzhitze,
then Tito will be in our hands tomorrow.
Your col. Mihailovich fulfill his duties.
- Wire him my congratulations. - Yes, sir.
This is London.
This is the bulletin about the heroic struggle
of Yugoslav army in the fatherland.
Western Serbia.
Chetnik troops keep intensive fighting against Germans around Uzhitze.
They inflicted severe losses to the enemy,
liberated several towns and villages and seized impressive war material.
German aggressor is in fear of col.Mihailovich.
The German divisions tremble of thunder of his arms.
Contrariwise, the people are full of enthusiasm and admiration,
seeing in chetniks' victories a way to final liberation.
Fighting without qaurter for their country
chetniks impressed all the free world.
English people admire these heroes and patriots
and is ready to provide them every kind of help,
as to their allies in the war against Hitler's and Mussolini's hordes.
We need to withdraw and evacuate the town.
Where to?
Sandzak. New free territory.
Misha, you'll help with evacuation.
Start with wounded and refugees.
Eeleeyah, you take care of the factory.
You - food and clothes supplies and printing facility.
How much time do we have?
Little.
German divisions are pushing our front lines.
They are assisted by chetniks and other numerous collaborators
both from Serbia and Bosnia.
Only a couple of our troops will stand in front of them,
others will go towards Sandzak and away.
For these 67 days of Republic of Uzhitze
we have organized our army and established
the rule of the people.
We made foundations of our future society.
That's why we are stronger today, even if we are withdrawing, than
we were when we came.
It is Tito's revolutionary stategy:
Each withdrawal must be followed by a larger victory, continual actions.
We leave this territory, but we have already free new ones:
in Sandzak, Montenegro, Bosnia, Croatia...
There we will continue what we have started here.
Liquidate all. This village is a communist base.
I expedited the rest of arms, amo and some machines.
What are my next tasks?
We'll see now.
Germans are approaching fast. I'm not sure if we can evacuate all.
Who do we have here to protect the town?
Neither single one complete unit.
From Commander-in-Chief.
Call the Workers Battalion.
Why are you throwing such a lot of hull?
I was just absent-minded.
Why?
What is the purpose of the potatoes?
The purpose... That the poor may peel something!
Chairman, you continue my work in the Council.
What about you?
Workers Battalion is to go to the fight.
Germans and chetniks headed from Bajina Bashta.
They advance faster than we expected.
You just keep working, we'll stop them.
How much yeast goes on a kilo of flour?
A half a kilo.
- How much salt? - A handful.
How long the dough need to rest?
- 1.5 hour. - You're gonna be a good baker!
That's it. Finished.
Finished.
Why are you repeating after me?!
When the master speaks, others should listen!
Take this. You're gonna need it.
Listen to me carefully and remember every word of mine.
Now I go with my bakers on Kadinyacha,
to give the partisans time to evacuate everything needed for the new country.
You'll go with them.
I don't need the new country without you!
Oh, you, again? Who said I won't be back?
You think you know everything now, so you can live alone?
You'll never be a good baker, when you're so stubborn!
Colonel, here is our Headquarters.
- Send me your commander. - Yes, sir!
The German colonel wants to see you.
Our commander, major Baratz.
We continue with our raid to Uzhitze.
Our patrols haven't seen significant partisan forces.
There is the front line.
It is 8 AM. We'll be in Uzhitze until 10 and stop their evacuation.
This is our route.
Go by left and right side of road.
Inform us as soon as you see communists.
Yes, sir!
They go by road, and we will break our legs again.
You go with others.
If everything is o.k., we will reach you soon.
Take care.
Take care of children.
I've gathered 15 soldiers.
Join the Headquarters' escort troop.
Tailors, come here to get bread and bombs.
Slavko, eyes-of-mine, deal out these.
Tailors, today we'll see who will measure who:
you Krauts, or opposite.
- Pero, come here. - Why, what is it?
I was kidding you earlier, but now I'm serious.
- Don't go with us. - Why?
You're so old, you can't stand it.
Old? Me? And you're so young, as morning dew in noon.
Comrades, I don't have much to say.
Nazis are approaching the town, together with domestic collaborators.
We have to stop them until the wounded and feeble citizens are evacuated.
- Communists are coming. - You saw them?
- No, our advance guard did. - Show me where.
In area of Kadinyacha, points 808, 836 and 720.
Here! Come. Shoot down there.
Oh, Bora!
- Are you wounded? - It's nothing. Just shoot.
Have our people left the town? My children are there.
Don't worry. You try to stay alive!
Oh, you Nazi ***!
'You're old! Stay in town!'
Watch Pero stopping malefactors!
What do you think, what is there in those trucks?
Now you'll see.
Major, partisans stopped the German column.
Can you see them? That's their main position.
I checked. There, left, tanks could outflank communists and strike them
from behind.
Should I inform Germans?
Stay here. I will.
Transmit this order immediately!
Air forces! Attack!
- Is that the chetnik commander? - Yes, sir.
Don't shoot! What does he want?
Fire at point 808!
Slavko, eyes-of-mine, give me some more bombs.
Chief, you're on your own.
Clear the road immediately! The column must pass!
Clucker, what happened?
It hit me. Go down there, tanks passing.
Take him, too.
- Have you brought all wounded? - Yes.
Now hurry up. Go.
- When will you...? - Hurry up, Yelena.
Misha, there's no Sava any more. Now you're everything I have.
I mustn't die until everyone leave the town.
- Wait for me on Zlatibor. - Bye.
Beli, here they come again!
WE'LL BE BACK
