This is Lorin McCann with Social Fever, and you're watching The Fever FAQ, where online
marketing gets a little simpler. You probably haven't heard this about social media before,
but it's a layer, as in layer of frosting, layer of an onion, or a sandwich...I'm kind
of hungry right now...
Basically, everyone knows at this point that it's incredibly important for businesses to
be using social media, and most people also know that a lot of businesses aren't using
it the right way. But you're not going to be one of them so you're going to keep watching,
right? I'll share how to layer social media into your online marketing strategy. Like
frosting. Or sprinkles.
If you woke up tomorrow and you had to start your business all over again, getting on Twitter
or Facebook would NOT be the first thing you do - for 99% of you at least. And it's the
same way when you're getting online, there are other things that come first.
You can tell if you're doing it wrong if...for...example, you're on Facebook and you have nothing original
to share and just find yourself posting other people's content. That's a lot of time you're
spending building up someone else's businesses, don't you think?
Understand that underneath all of engagement and warm fuzzies of social media, you're there
to drive traffic to your website.
So let's talk about these layers. There are 4 of them.
Layer # 1 The cake, bread with mayo, or core of your
onion is your website. Unless you have your website, your other layers will have nothing
to be layered on top of, and that gets messy. We don't want that for you. So make sure all
of your online marketing has a nice website as homebase, or layer #1.
Layer #2 Is your blog/podcast/video marketing series.
I'll save why having original content is so important for a different episode and just
assume you are committed to creating original content. Have a blog? Or videos? Or a podcast?
Good. Layer # 2 is complete.
Layer #3 Is building your email list. Now, this is
layer # 3 because of the way it fits into your eventual social media strategy, but remember
that you never have to wait to start building your email list. You can even do it before
you ever launch your business (and you should!). But, no matter what, you need to have an account
set up where you can collect email opt-ins before you go out on social media.
and finally, layer #4 Is social media! Let's reiterate why: Social
media isn't just an engagement tool, and it's definitely NOT a magic bullet. It takes time,
planning, and dedication in order to be effective, and most people don't give it that commitment.
When you drill it down, the reason you are on social media as a business is to build
your list and drive traffic to your site. So, you set up your website, create share-able,
valuable content, get your email opt-ins ready to go, THEN you can go buck wild on social
media, knowing your system is in place.
As an entrepreneur, you're already SO busy, so it's important that time spent on social
media counts for something. And, now that you understand how it all works, it will!
Now it's challenge time. Is there a layer I mentioned that you're not using? If so,
take one action today toward getting it started.
I hope you liked this video and found it useful, and if you did, then like it, and share it
with someone who might also find it kinda useful. If haven't already, you can sign up
