I'm Marv Beloff, I'm 84, and for the last 18 years, I've been making wooden bow ties
And, I guess there aren't too many people who do that.
My wife had thrown away most of my old bow ties
Because I never wore them, and when I decided to wear them again and they weren't there
I went to antique stores, and all kinds of men's shops, and there were no bow ties that satisfied my needs.
And as I was working on a piece of sculpture, I noticed in this piece of North Carolina yellow pine
I noticed graining that looked like a wooden bow tie.
And so, I cut it out, and made a bow tie, and that was how it all began.
Everyone who wears a wooden bow tie, will discover, if they like people, that it will help
Because no matter where I go, people stop me, and ask me
Because they know I'm wearing something that's different that they've not seen before.
And so, I have met many many people because of my wooden bow ties.
For me, as a sculptor, it's wonderful to be challenged
And to see how I would make a golf club, or a paint brush, or a ukulele.
I believe that creativity, art, and music broaden the perspective and the horizons
And make life much more meaningful.
I have kind of a mantra, I believe that there are three things that are most important
Passion, persistance, and repetition.
You have to have passion for something that you do, whether it's playing a game, or creating a piece of art.
You have to be persistent, so that you learn how to do it well, and properly, and for you.
And you have to do it over, and over, and over again.
And you do get it right, eventually...if you have those three things, together.
You can't make make a living at making bow ties, but you can meet some wonderful people.
And I've done that.
Yeah, I've had a good life. I'm very happy with it
