Hi. I'm Alicia. And I'm Jason.
Welcome to Nazareth College. Alicia: Naz is committed to providing a safe
and healthy environment. Jason: For this to be successful, everyone
must play their part. There are some fire safety policies that we must follow in all
residence halls. Alicia: Let's go see a residence hall.
Jason: Welcome to Kearney Hall. Every residence hall
is equipped with fire alarm pull stations, exit signs, fire extinguishers and every residence
hall is equipped with heat and smoke detectors. The policies are set to keep you and the people
around you safe. And there will be inspections in all residence halls, so if you ignore the
policies it could get you into trouble. Alicia: We all bring a lot of electronics
with us to college. Only the things we plug directly into a wall outlet or a power strip
are allowed. Power cubes and extension cords are not allowed so leave them at home. Another
hazard to avoid is placing any wires under a rug as they may overheat. And always remember,
when electronics are not in use, unplug them. Sometimes it can be tough, but we have to
keep our rooms clear of obstructions like large suitcases and furniture. Everybody loves
to decorate their room, but some decorations can lead to some serious fire safety hazards.
This may include; five headed lamps and large tapestries, which are both prohibited in your
room. Jason: Also never use toasters or grills in
your room. Plus no smoking is allowed or any open flames, such as candles.
In residence halls, kitchens are provided. So we ask you leave the hot plates and microwaves
at home. Cooking may be done in any of the kitchens which are equipped with a stove,
oven, and microwave. Alicia: And always remember to never leave
any food unattended, especially microwave popcorn since this burns easily and may set
off a smoke alarm and nobody wants that.
Jason: Welcome to Breen Hall, one of the apartment style buildings on campus.
Alicia: If you live in the apartments of Portka, Lyons and Breen, they are equipped with a
full kitchen, so you are allowed different cooking equipment than in the other residence
halls. Jason: Please speak to your RA about what
is allowed or what is not. There are two types of alarms on campus. If the alarm goes off,
the campus safety department will respond immediately. The first type of alarm is the
fire alarm which looks and sounds like this. Alicia: The fire alarms on campus are monitored
by Campus Safety. If there is an emergency, the local authorities will be contacted and
will respond to campus immediately. Jason: For your safety and required by law,
please evacuate the building immediately through the nearest exit if you hear the fire alarm
go off. If you cannot evacuate the building for any reason please stay inside your room
and contact Campus Safety. It is always best to know two ways out and treat all alarms
as the real thing. Please remember, don't hesitate, evacuate.
Alicia: The second type of alarm you may hear on campus is the security escort system. This
is a personal emergency system. It sounds like this.
The most common causes of fire alarms are cooking, hair care, body spray and air fresheners.
Hair care products are the most frequent cause of false fire alarms on campus. Please use
your hair products in the bathroom since the steam from the heat may set off an alarm.
Also, be careful when spraying air freshener, perfume or cologne as these may set off an
alarm if sprayed directly at a smoke detector or in a high concentration. As for cooking,
remember to stay and watch your cooking no matter what it is.
Jason: So there you have it. Some simple fire safety tips to keep you and your friends'
safe at Nazareth College. Alicia: For a more information please call
Campus Safety at 389-2850, visit the Campus Safety website, refer to your undergraduate
handbook or speak to your RA. Jason and Alicia: See you around campus.
