At the age of 92, Chico Xavier has psychographed over 400 books and thousands of messages.
His speedy hand and his sharp pencil were always serving the communication
between the world of living people and the universe of the spirits.
But the phenomenon of psychography puzzled the journalists.
In August 1944, "O Cruzeiro" magazine reporters David Nasser and Jean Manzon
went to Pedro Leopoldo to test Chico Xavier's mediumistic powers.
They introduced themselves as American journalists
and they did a long article entitled "Chico, Detetive do Além".
Jean Manzon has photographed the medium concentrating
and then, his camera caught a flagrant that the magazine has classified as "sensational".
Chico in trance in the bathtub.
Soon after, the medium appears reading, psychographing
and having moments of relaxation inside the house,
where he resided with his sisters.
The photos revealed Chico as an ingenuous man.
Jean Manzon and David Nasser left Pedro Leopoldo convinced that
Chico Xavier's mediumistic powers were not "so" exceptional.
If he were really oriented by Emmanuel, his spiritual guide,
why their (journalists) truly identities hadn't been discovered?
Nevertheless, when they got home and opened the books given by the medium,
they were surprised.
At dawn, Manzon telephoned me and said: "Have you ever seeing the book that Chico Xavier gave to you?"
I said: - No.
"So, take a look."
I took the book in the library at my office,
my home office,
and it was written exactly this: "To my brother David Nasser, from Emmanuel."
To Manzon, he wrote a similar dedication.
That's why I am afraid to get involved in Spiritism.
It is a difficult terrain for doing an article.
It is a swampy area.
We don't have a basis to claim: "That is it or it is that".
It is a very difficult subject for the reporters.
Chico used to read the psychographed poems. (Chico Xavier: A puzzle for the journalists)
"In someone's mind who loves,
"From the noblest ones to the most plebs,
"Even flowering in the mud,
"It is a God's love Lilium". (Auta de Souza)
Why could he pass from criticized and discredited man to pop-idol?
How do explain this turnaround?
It is easy.
His coherence explains this turnaround because everyone expected that, sooner or later, he should fall.
So the skeptic said: "Sooner or later, his mask will fall and we'll see his fraud."
And Chico said: "I won't fall never, cause I never stood up".
It was his motto.
It is 64 years of mediumship.
During this time,
Chico Xavier's house in Uberaba, Minas Gerais,
was always full.
There are queues of people who seek help,
a word, a smile.
Some of them got amazing stories to tell.
Sandra Wazir, police chief of Uberaba,
lost his brother Renato in a car crash.
Her family sought Chico Xavier
who psychographed Renato's 13 pages message.
Sandra is sure that these words belong to his brother.
He quotes a great-great-grandparent...
We didn't even know about her.
And we ascertained that she really has existed
through registry offices in the city where she had been lived,
And we have ascertained that she really had been lived there
and died about 60 years ago.
Chico Xavier's psychographed letters are so respectable
that they were even used as evidences in the court.
João de Deus was judged in Campo Grande, State of Mato Grosso do Sul,
accused of murdering, with a shot, his wife Cleide Maria Dutra,
Miss Campo Grande 1975.
In Chico Xavier's psychographed message,
Cleide claimed that the shot was accidental.
The jury accepted the message and, unanimously, absolved João de Deus.
When she said that
wherever my good man's footsteps are
she will be there too, begging God for my happiness,
I guess it was worth everything.
We have two classical cases
about two people accused of committing homicide,
who were absolved in the court,
thanks to psycographed letters by mediums, among them Chico Xavier,
in which the victim defended the accused person.
(Reenactment)
Do you wanna a cigarette, Zé?
Nope.
Hey!
The gun shot! Mauricio?
God's sake! Mauricio, it was unintentionally!
Mom! Mom! It was unintentionally!
Mauricio! Mauricio!
Get up, man! (Chico Xavier's letters - TV program "Linha Direta")
First, the cigarette in his mouth fell. (Defendant in the "Case of Mauricio")
He put his hand (on the wound) and said: - Oh, Zé, you shot me!
Mauricio's parents receive his first letter.
And since then, they learn to forgive.
"Dear dad, mom, Maria José and Nadia,
"may God bless us.
"I'm here with my grandfather Henrique
"and I ask you: be courageous and be resigned.
"We must remember God in the events on Earth.
"I make a request.
"Don't think about my return to spiritual world creating sad feelings.
"Zé Divino was not guilty.
"If someone must apologize, it is me,
"because I am supposed to be studying and not playing.
"I promise to make myself better and making you happier as I can.
"I am your son and brother, homesick and grateful,
"Mauricio Garcez Henrique."
In the case of the fire in the Joelma Building in São Paulo, in February 1974,
189 people died.
A mother, who lost her daughter in the fire, sought Chico Xavier
and he promised to try to contact her daughter.
And he delivered her a letter dictated by her daughter, plenty of details that only the mother knew.
(Reenactment) Volquimar and her friends don't survive the fire.
Two months later.
Valquiria, mother of Volquimar, asks for medium Chico Xavier's help,
for communicating with her daughter.
Did she disembody long time ago?
You are pretty nervous... Let with me.
It was 2 months ago... She was one of the victims of the fire in the Joelma Building.
Take it easy, madam... Your daughter is fine.
She needed to go through this,
due to things that she'd done in previous incarnations.
Two poets' spirits told Chico that
the victims of the fire in the Joelma Building
were reincarnations of people who lived in 11th century and fought in the Crusades,
to regain Jerusalem.
You asked me to come back 13 July.
Volquimar will communicate.
She was accompanied by her grandfather.
Here it is her letter which was transcribed to newspapers on occasion.
She tells everything that had happened there.
"Dear mommy, my beloved Álvaro,
"first of all, I beg God's blessing to come to our aid and I beg my beloved mommy to be strong
"as long as I take the pencil to write, under my grandfather's support."
First of all, I respect the faith of the other.
I think it is fundamental in any article you do.
I think you must respect, first of all,
trying to understand the other.
In the case of these articles, there was a religious issue
and my concern has grown.
Because I did not want to let these people in a "uncomfortable situation".
It was enough the problems that they had gone through, the crosses that they were carrying.
So I tried to understand,
although these people did not need explications.
They did not need explications, but I needed.
And my team (of journalists) and my director as well.
Many families attended by him, and advised by him,
these families have truly opened establishments of social assistance all over Brazil.
They help others families who lost their children.
They give soup.
They give clothes.
So, Chico, with his example of life,
and with his published books,
because each book inspires people throughout their lives and forever,
he has created a network of solidarity.
