The problem of antibiotic resistance is really one of the world's most threatening public
health problems. The problem is only getting worse. Actually, in the United States, about
two million illnesses occur each year, and 23,000 people die as a result of antibiotic
resistant infections. So this is not just a problem for you as an individual. Every
time you take an antibiotic it impacts everyone around you.
Setting this national target is just a first step. And now we need to figure out how we're going to get there.
CDC and Pew will be working together to track antibiotic use and resistance on an annual basis.
And we will work together to identify how best to make progress towards that goal.
The key is not using antibiotics unless they're absolutely needed, and making sure that antibiotics are
used for the right duration, at the right dose, and the right drug.
