Hi Book Riot friends. I'm Maria Cristina, one of the contributing editors at book riot
here to bid you a good Thursday with this video. In a little more than a week,
we are going to get into a rented car, drive a couple hours north to a state
park and pitch a tent. I'm really excited for camping. My adult life I haven't been
camping that much. We did this around the same time last year. So when we decided
we wanted to do this, I went out, borrowed camping for dummies, read
through that. Camping for dummies was fantastic. I had all of this information
right in one volume, didn't have to do internet research where I have a dozen
tabs open at once. But it wasn't really anything that was getting me in the mood,
that was getting me excited. It did make me feel more at ease because now I knew
what to do to make sure we were safe and had enough supplies. I could have a good
time. But I wasn't necessarily feeling inspired. So I picked up a book I had
been meaning to read: Bill Bryson's a walk in the woods and-- everybody, Gilbert.
Gilbert, everybody. So I picked up-- I'm so distracted by this. A walk in the woods was a
fine read, wasn't necessarily what I had been looking for though. For the most
part, I just became really irritated with Bill Bryson's camping companions and
they weren't even really camping too much. They were hiking a little bit of a
different thing. So this year I decided to find something else. I don't know this
is going to be any better. But what I chose is under the stars.
And I don't know. I haven't started it yet. It's by Dan White who decided to research
the history of camping in America. And he decided to do it while also taking
himself camping. I don't know that kind of experiential, academic thing appeals
to me a lot. So I will report back, let you know how this book influenced my
camping experience next week. But in the meantime, I'd like to know if you have
ever done any reading not just for researching an upcoming experience but
for getting you in the mood for that experience. Tell me about it. And if you
have any other books about camping that you would recommend, let me know too.
Thanks for watching.
