I think it’s important to communicate with the people of California. To go into their
communities, talk to their leaders, talk to hardworking individuals. What I like to say
is you have enormous stake in the University of California, even if it is true that you
don’t have a son or daughter attending. Tell them what is true about the University
of California – that we are affordable; that we’re a very high quality university’
that we’re spending the taxpayer money carefully. If they think we’re spending our money on
rock walls and spas when we’re not, they’re going to say, “why should the state provide
more support when they’re just wasting it?” If they think that we don’t do anything
to promote efficiencies or reduce costs, they’ll say “I did that in my own business, I did
that in my own household, why don’t they?” So, I think it’s important to get the message
out in a way you can’t really do very easily through the media.
