In this day and age most people can’t live without their smartphones.
We check them on average 46 times a day, not including the times we’re simply holding
on to it.
But even though we’re so attached to our smartphones we don’t spend much time thinking
about how clean they are, and we should.
All the germs on your hands end up on your smartphone.
And though we wash and sanitize our hands, our smartphones don’t receive the same treatment.
Luckily, we’ve got a simple how to guide to keep your smartphone clean.
WHY CLEAN IT According to microbiologist and pathologist
Philip Tierno, it’s common to find bacteria from your skin, mouth, and respiratory tract
on your phone.
Some studies have even found bacteria that live in fecal matter!
These won’t usually make you sick, but they might.
These bacteria may also aggravate acne, dermatitis, and rosacea.
So it’s important to your well-being to routinely clean your smartphone.
But how do you clean your smartphone?
WASH YOUR HANDS The first thing you can do to keep your smartphone
clean, as a preventative measure, is to wash your hands.
Most germs end up on people’s smartphones because they aren’t washing their hands
properly after a bathroom break.
Use soap, and rub your hands for at least 20 seconds then dry your hands off.
Also, try not to touch the bathroom door on the way out.
WIPE IT DOWN Simply wiping your phone every day will remove
most, though not all, of the bacteria.
For a more serious clean you can buy smartphone cleaner.
You may be thinking, ‘why not use antibacterial wipes?’
Well, a smartphone screen is just like your computer monitor screen, and harsh chemicals
may damage it.
If you don’t want to buy specialized screen cleaners, you can make your own.
You just need a microfiber cloth, 70% isopropyl alcohol, distilled water, and a spray bottle.
A once-a-week wipe down with a cleaning solution will suffice, although we still recommend
you wipe your smartphone with a microfiber cloth every day.
CREVICES Don’t forget the gunk that can end up in
the crevices of your smartphone.
Toothpicks or cotton swabs are good tools for getting in there.
You can even put some of your cleaning solution on the cotton swabs to be really thorough.
DON’T FORGET ACCESSORIES You don’t want to forget about your phone
accessories when you clean either.
Things like earbuds, charging cords, etc.
You can wipe these things down with soap, water, and a soft cloth.
Or you could consider investing in a UV sanitizer.
UV sanitizers are very handy, and can reach places you can’t get with cleaning solution.
Now that your smartphone is clean, look around at your surroundings.
