Part of the Forest Service mission is to protect over 193 million acres of forests and grasslands
from wildfires. Our Firefighting teams consist of smoke jumpers who parachute into remote
areas and fight fires on the ground, hand crews who use tools such as shovels to cut
lines in the soil around a fire, engine crews that spray water and foam into fires, helitack
crews that support helicopter operations, dispatchers, fire lookouts, and fire prevention
specialist, and our elite hotshot force of multi-skilled professional firefighters. During
the peak fire season months of May to September each year, the Forest Service hires over 12,000
seasonal federal employees whose primary mission is to work in the areas of fire suppression.
This hiring effort could not be accomplished without the use of open continuous vacancy
announcements. These announcements allow us to open one vacancy announcement that allows
applicants to apply one time for multiple locations in the United States instead of
having to apply multiple times. Without this flexibility, the Forest Service would never
be able to hire thousands of employees simultaneously to protect one of our greatest national treasures
– our Forests. We all know how valuable protecting our national lands is to the United
States and to our future generations. These lands are protected by people like you; people
committed to ensuring our legacy remains strong and vital as it is today. I’m Elizabeth
and I work in fire and aviation management for the US Forest Service. We invite you to
review and apply to our vacancy announcements on OPM’s USA Jobs website. The website can
