>>Ross: Hey guys welcome back to SourceFed, I’m Ross Everett
>>Elliott: I’m Elliott Morgan
>>Ross: You know how Facebook knows pretty
much everything about you?
>>Elliott: Yeah
>>Ross: Where you live, your likes and interests, your friends likes and interests, your age,
your gender…
>>Elliott: Yeah
>>Ross: And they use that information that they’ve collected to target you with advertisements
>>Elliott: Yeah
>>Ross: They’re essentially selling your
eyes
>>Elliott: Yeah! Let’s get ‘em!
>>Ross: Well, it turns out they’re actually using that technology for good this time.
>>Elliott: You set me up for that.
>>Ross: I did. It turns out that Facebook
is employing the same methods that they use to tell you about a sponsored Samsung post
that a friend “likes” to help those affected by the UK floods.
>>Elliott: Notices sprung up on Facebook users’
feeds in flood-affected areas encouraging them to connect with people in their area
who can help.
>>Ross: The notice directs users to the FloodVolunteers.co.uk website that helps pair people offering help
with those in need of assistance. And Facebook, normally known for buying your favorite apps
and making them slightly worse with over innovation, is trying to return to their roots of positive
and helpful advancements.
>>Elliott: The new system uses the recently released data from the Environment Agency
that can provide almost real-time information about where floods are occurring around the
country. Should an area become flooded, Facebook will use that geo-targeting information you
didn’t want to know they had to display messages to those who are most likely to be
affected.
>>Ross: So good on you Facebook. And since you’re making changes for the better. We
here at SourceFed came up with a few ideas to add to your future site features. DuckFace
filter. Also known as the selfie suppressor. We know what you look like, let’s just get
those out of there.
>>Elliott: Podcast organizer. A nice tab dedicated to all my friends new podcasts that they’ve
decided to start. So I can listen to all of them. Or not.
>>Ross: And the humble bragulator. A nice
automated comment that appears beneath a post containing a humble brag that reads “must
be nice”
>>Elliott: What would you guys like to see Facebook include as a feature? Let us know
in the comments below. Don’t forget to like the video, subscribe to the channel, and click
this annotation for all your social media doing good news. I’m Elliott Morgan.
>>Ross: I’m Ross Everett. Did you hear what
Google+ is doing, though?
>>Elliott: No, what?
>>Ross: Me either.
