Hello everyone, today I would like to share with all of you about Cyber Crime.
According to Cambridge Dictionaries, Cyber crime can be defined as the laws about how people should use computers,
especially the internet, or one of these laws while cyber crime is the crime or
illegal activity that is done using the internet.
The advancement in technology, the increase usage of internet and the important of
information or data had make cyber crime become active in the recent years. From the traditional crime
like robbery or burglary to hacking, stealing money to identity theft, deceptive callers to phishing and etc.
had shown that cyber crime may came in various form and the number of cases are showing in an alarming rate.
However, the awareness of majority of the internet user toward cyber crime is still low.
In Malaysia, the case of cyber crime has skyrocketed in recent years. One of the notorious
cases of cyber crime that happened in Malaysia is the
"Operation Malaysia -- The launch of hacking attack on Malaysia government website by Anonymous."
"Anonymous" is a decentralized virtual community. The community members typically consist of incognito
internet based hacktivists. Those insanity self-deem themselves as saints,
hold the power to make judgement using their knowledge. Anonymous seeks mass awareness and revolution against what
the organization perceives as corrupt entities, while attempting to maintain anonymity.
Anonymous has had a hacktivist impact. They welcome public to join them using the slogan
This group had perform an attack on the Malaysian Government portal when the Malaysian Government
is preventing the free distribution of information by censoring its internet, blocking file sharing sites, like the Pirate Bay in Malaysia.
The hackers give the ample time about when they will launch the attack early to the Government
but unfortunately the Government was clueless on what to do in anticipation of the attack
except to pull the plugs of the World Wide Web.
As a result, total of 51 Malaysia Government website were being attacked
and cause disruptions to at least 41 web sites.
To counter react the effects caused by the attack,
Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC)'s Network Security Center
has been making concerted efforts to mitigate the attacks around the clock and continue
to work with other enforcement agencies and security experts as well service providers
to monitor the situation.
There had been little impact on Malaysian users as a result of this attack.
However, the overall recovery to these websites does
not take long as most websites had been recovered from the attack within a few hours.
The Malaysia Government advised the public to report any information they may have regarding
the identity of these hackers or anyone that involve in cybercrime as the act to disrupt
network services is a serious offence, which is punishable by cyber law.
This case is important because it had highlighted the issues of low awareness of society toward cyber crime in Malaysia.
The lack of awareness on the seriousness of cyber crime makes society be easily victimized.
Generally the personal information such as credit card number, bank account number and etc.
tend to be the target of the cyber crime.
Careless in protecting this kind of valuable information would cause individual to loss their properties.
We know that the members of "Anonymous" are actually a group of internet users from the society.
Some of them simply have no idea about the consequence of joining this type of illegal group or
organization to perform cyber crime.
Since they have limited awareness on this kind of issues, they normally make emotional decision when involve in this kind of activity.
They don't know this activity is actually can be classified as cyber crime.
To curb the proliferation of cybercrime in Malaysia, we believe that education is absolutely
the most powerful weapon which we can use to tackle the cyber crime.
Most of the time, individuals involve in cyber crime by blindly following others.
Their inadequate education level leaves them unable to properly discern the righteousness and evil.
Through education, society will be taught about the consequence of cybercrime and
they will come to realize the guilt of conducting cyber crime.
On top of that, instilling of correct education to the public will always act as a reminder
in their mind to warn them never to join any illegal organizations or involve in any illegal activities.
Besides that, Internet users should always remain alert to the cyber crime that may came to them
in various form like phishing and etc. by not disclosing any personal data to the unreliable source.
In conclusion, fighting against cybercrime will take a long period of time.
However, as long as we keep the faith of triumph over the cyber crime in our heart,
together with patience and effort, the fruition will pay off in the end.
Thank you for watching and listening.
